First one I've seen like this from early NSW records:

V18411268 121A/1841 HAWTHORNE CHARLOTTE - -

Roman Catholic Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of East Maitland in the County of Northumberland in the Year 1856
No When Baptised: ? [margin] August 1856 Aged 15 Years Charlotte Hawthorne - Abode: - Sponsor: Mary O'Neil By whom the Ceremony was performed: John Kenny R.C.C.

Most curious - married by a Presbyterian minister but one who was known not to ask too many questions:

609/1861 POWELL STRAFFORD J - HAWTHORNE CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 11 September 1861 p.1
MARRIAGES
On the 4th of March, at Elizabeth-street, by the Rev. Dr. Fullerton, by special license, Stradford James Powell, of the Glebe, to Miss Charlotte Hawthorn, of this city.

No trace of Stratford/Strafford/Stradford or Charlotte after 1865.

You may be aware, but 1865 does appear significant, birth of his son, Stratford J and Stratford J Sr., is in a boarding house, I can't see any other family members with him.

Also 3 interesting possible marriages for Charlotte, can't see any for Stratford..
1053/1868 HENSE CHRISTIAN POWELL CHARLOTTE S SYDNEY
2112/1885 MACMAHON JOHN POWELL CHARLOTTE SYDNEY
2112/1885 MCMAHON JOHN POWELL CHARLOTTE SYDNEY

Trove..

OFFENCES WITH HORSES.- August Wilms, for furi-
ously riding along the Randwick Road on Saturday, en-
dangering the life of George Evana by knocking him
down and running over him, was fined 20s, Evans not
appearing. Stratford Powell, omnibus driver, for being
at too great a distance from his horses, was fined 10s.
and 5s costs. End Quote.
There is a similar offence for later in the year.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) 14 January 1861
This copy is lengthy, hence the link > http://tinyurl.com/paqd2me

This is interesting because 'Foxlow Place' is the boarding house address where Stratford was in 1865
Empire (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1875)Saturday 25 February 1865
Catherine Flunn, of Foxlow-placc, was charged with

Maybe keep it on the sideline for now. I'll have a look and see if i can find anything else to tie in with it to help eliminate or confirm it.

Hello Geoff,

I had the articles from TROVE re the bus accident but missed the bit about the boarding house.

The POWELL family are a 'funny' lot because they were not RC although some members in Australia were:

Nobility, Gentry and Clergy section of Pigots (1824) for Castle-Connell
Captain Ayre Powell, World's-end. ...

so not your average ag lab family.

Thanks gibbo. :)

That seems to be a different family. CofE.

I wonder if my Charlotte was an Irish orphan. Better check that shipping list.

Seems not with the CofE baptism fitting with the religion on shipping record.

Still good to find things that confirm something.

I've not yet tried to trace that 1841 CofE Charlotte.

It's actually the POWELL family that's in my tree by marriage to SANDS - both mainly Presbyterian.

Curious. A tree has a son William Robert born 1862.

Birth 2892/1861 POWELL ROBERT G - STRATFORD - CHARLOTTE - GLEBE

Birth 2827/1863 POWELL (MALE) - STRATFORD - CHARLOTTE - GLEBE

Birth 74/1865 POWELL STRATFORD J - STRATFORD J - CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

Tree has this marriage:

9096/1900 POWELL WILLIAM R S - HUMPHREYS MILLISCENT C - MOSS VALE

and no death for him or his parents.

Three different POWELL families with mother = Charlotte looking at births around 1860.

If you look at deaths in NSW to 1982 there are 7 families with mother = Charlotte.

There is this death:

702/1872 POWELL JOHN J - - CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

I doubt the 1862 birth and the 1900 marriage.

I think the death might fit.

Rookwood Presbyterian 6 0001615 POWELL JOHN J 23 May 1872

I'd better check the Irish orphans. Only this one:

Hawthorn Martha, Strabane, Tyrone

Oh. It says the database in incomplete.
