Hello Anwyn...there wasnt really childrens homes as such back then..there were a few charitable organisations that helped in a small way...wealthy benefactors sometimes left money for helping children.
I lived in a home in the 70/80s...it was fairly strict even then.,but nothing like when they first opened mainly from the victorian era.
The Limes ware i lived has an old register gong back to the 1880s and the way kids were treated then was appalling....many were beaten for bed wetting and not allowed breakfast for the same reason...think the book is in the Wiltshire archives now......i was at the limes for 6 years and got to say i was abit of an urchin!
