Shadwell 9.7 km NE of Leeds city and listed in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Scadewelle.
1861 census John was living with Mary in Shadwell working as a stone mason. Mary was recorded as mason’s wife and shopkeeper. Walter and Carmi recorded as “mason’s apprentice.” Gaunt Albert was 12 and was recorded as a carter.
1871 census John aged 56 was living with Mary in Shadwell on Shadwell Rd about two houses from the parsonage. John, Gaunt Albert and Arthur were all recorded as masons in this census.
In the 1881 census John was listed as a mason and builder. He was living in Prospect House. Mark Burnett was 23, recorded as a mason’s son. Rose Burnett was recorded as his daughter aged twenty.
*Carmi Burnett born in Shadwell was my ggreat grandfather. I am currently searching records to confirm that he died in the UK or is the Carmi Burnett 1844-1910 died in Sydney Australia, where the rest of us on that line were born.
