I am trying to sift through some information on one Alexander McDonald, born in Edinburgh in 1870. The family was living in the civil parish of Old Church when the 1871 census was taken...but none of the birth records give that place. Might there have been another name for this area?
Any thoughts?
I'd appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!
Katie

Hello Katie,

I think this explains it:

The Old Kirk was previously located in Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, an area where the population was declining. The congregation was ‘translated’ (i.e. moved) to Pennywell Road.

So if you search now you will find references to Pennywell Road which is way north of the Canongate part of the old town.

Regards,

Dave
