I once salvaged a butter/cream churn. S.A. No.2.
I faithfully restored it. It had a metal liner and was like a square wooden bucket, with a spiral blade through the centre, and a handle to churn the butter. I gave it to a friend who loved it. It now sits on the verandah of her lovely old weatherboard country home, in Ned Kelly country Victoria. A more fitting home for it than my verandah.

I think your coal bucket/scuttle is lovely, and I would be interested in the meaning of the picture. It looks like a scene from very early days.
Don't worry gibbo whether it's copper or brass, you like it and that's all that matters. You didn't buy it to resell! I keep a lot of "stuff" that no one but me likes. Joan:)

Thanks Joan.

A old butter churn, what a great find.
I carted home a old wooden seat once:biggrin: I liked it and saw potential in that seat :2fun::2fun: It was going to the dump, which is where my husband reckons it belonged:eek: but i rescued it:biggrin: Gave it a coat of paint and years later its still sitting in my garden, tho getting a bit wobbly and near its use by date now. It looked a bit dull still after i painted it so in pink paint i wrote on the top of it in spanish "i love this seat" For more than 12 months hubby didnt know what it said until someone who could read spanish told him:2fun::2fun::2fun:

One of my strange pieces of "junk", is quite unusual and I don't know what it is, I suspect it's an old cigarette rolling machine, but I'm not sure. It says British patent no.100237- 1916.I might post a pic of it, someone might recognise it.;) The attached picture is an old wooden spinning top, I paid 10 cents for it at a garage sale my hubby got a piece of string and knew how to wind the string, flick it to the ground, and spin the top just like a kid.
I have lots of other stuff. I really need another room for books and junk I collect, maybe I can convert the spare bedroom we have for the grand kids and visitors. "no way" says my husband.:'( joan:)

As a kid i had the tin ones. Its amazing what you can pick up at garage sales.

Hi Gibbo

If you want to see if your bucket is genuine, look at the bottom. Has it got dints scratches and wear. If its pristine, it could be a fake made yesterday in the far east.

Hi gibbo, About the top, my husband says he had one as a child, he's almost 80, so I'm guessing it must be from that era. It's quite worn, and has a metal pin in the bottom. There are no marks on it to show where/when it was made, or by whom. But I like it:biggrin: joan:)

Love that cow bell Joan. I reckon homemade things have character. You got lots of good stuff:biggrin:

I've got a singer sewing machine bottonhole attachment:rolleyes: Its never been used and still in its original box with instructions. Its a complicated looking thing to:rolleyes: No sewing machine tho:2fun::2fun: It has written on the box "made in Great Britain" so im assuming its fairly old as i think they just put made in England on things now:confused:

Thanks gibbo, you have some neat stuff yourself.
My husband shudders when I go to a secondhand shop or garage sale. I look for the unusual. We recently found an old secondhand shop, which was a rabbit warren of rooms, with rotten floors and dodgy electic lights. Stacked to the roof with junk. We had a good time fossicking around, and came out with 2 goose neck standard lamps, one for my sewing machine, so I can see, to thread the needle, and one for his shed when he is soldering or for close work. I'm off to find a photo for this forum, I should have one of great grandma and 2x great grandma, taken ?? when they came to Australia via England, from Spain. I need a rough year when it might have been taken.
Joan:) .

This is a hand made copper cow bell, age unknown, still in tune, as good as the day it was made. joan:)
Joan i have some news for you, that isnt an old cow bell but an instrument used by the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra in there last concert given, the police will be most interested to know of where you aquired it.

Hope this clears that one up for you:)

The nearest bucket I could find to yours said it was Georgian but it had people and horses on it so not exactly the same but similar shape and type of raised image.

Just had a thought Gibbo.

Get a magnet, and touch your bucket on the side with it. If it 'sticks', it's not Brass, but electroplated steel.(If that's the case, put the bucket in the bin. :2fun::2fun::2fun: ).

If it doesn't stick, then Brass it is.:kissu:

Looking at the bottom of it, it looks like mild steel, as it's brown & rusty. If it was Brass on the bottom, it would be a Greenish corrosion.

Whatever it is, it looks grand.;):)

Steve.:)

The magnet sticks to the inside:confused: Does that mean i have a cheap bucket that has a thin layer of brass around it with pictures on it:2fun::2fun::2fun:
Love my bucket anyway:biggrin:

It means you don't have to look for a steel liner for it.:2fun::2fun:

It maybe a Brass 'skin' on the outside of a steel inner bucket.;).....still looks good though.:kissu:
