Hi all,

I'm after information / birth certificate for John Hill - I really want to know more about him and his parents.

I've fouind him on the 1901 census and also on the 1891 census.
The transcription on the 1891 census is wrong it gives his name as Hile also his age as 39 when it is 30 but with a tally line through the 0 to make it look like a 9.

I have his marriage certificate but his parents' details are left blank :(

Hi Skip

When did he marry Mary Ann and what was her maiden surname?

When you say parents details left blank, I take it the fathers name and occupation is left blank?

Hi Benny - thanks for the reply.

John married Mary Ann Pritchard on 15th June 1883

Marriages Jun 1883 (>99%)
Hill John Newport M 11a 330
PRITCHARD Mary Ann Newport M. 11a 330

Yes on the marriage cert the father's name and occupation have just a squiggle in them.

John's proffesion is listed as 'Haulier'.

Mary’s father is listed as James (deceased) and he was a coal miner.
Residence at time of marriage (for both bride and groom) is listed as Caerleon.
The witnesses were Martha Ann Jones and Edith L Jones – no relation as far as I can tell.

Caerleon is within the parish of Llangattock-juxta-Caerleon, and ‘Llangattock’ is given as the ‘born in’ location on the 1901 census for John, Mary and their eldest Augustus,
But John's Parish of birth is diferent on the 1891 census.

Hope you can help.

Hi Skip

It is possible that John Hill was illegitimate, or his father had died. I have had a case where the father was left blank but the child in question was legitimate but her dad had died. Normally even if the father is dead, he is entered but on occasions he may not be. Or there was some shame in the family concerning his father. It is more likely that he was illegitimate though.

I did find a John Hy Hill born in Monmouth in the 1881 census aged 16, listed as a Haulier, with parents Henry and Harriet.

I see from the 1901 census that Mary was also born in Llangattock. I found her in the 1881 census aged 20 a General Servant at a farm in Llangattock living with Alfred and Rachel Gething.

I cannot yet find John Hill in Llangattock in 1881. When he married is he listed as a widower or bachelor. Does it state his age?

Hi Ben,

Thaks for such a swift reply!

He's listed as 23 years and a bachelor
Mary's listed as 21 years and a spinster

That's a good suggestion that he may have been illegitimate.
Yes - I found Mary as well, working at Penrose Farm?

I'm not sure of how to procede now. There are at least 4 'Llangattocks' in Monmouthshire. Also the 1891 census has a diiferent birth parish and I don't recognise the name.

This man is proving very hard to trace.

:(

As ever - many thanks for your help.
Skip.

Hi Skip

I am still having trouble locating him in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. There is a John Hill born in Llantillo living in Abergavenny Monmouth. He was born in about 1857.
