confused with doublebarrel name beckett/stockton

hi everyone ,could anyone please please help,i've come across 1881 census for mary beckett/stockton b:1879 burslem ,parents john/jane stockton,sister elizabeth the connection for these persons are through marriage (mary to leonard millward1895) i've found census up to 1901 containing john/jane but name is becket with more children plus a granchild john milward on 1901However the doublebarrel
name is confusing me as i'm try to find marriage for john/jane can't work out
what to do or what names to follow john b:middlewich 1842/ jane 1846 according to 1881 brownhills
hope someone out there can help with this puzzle appreciate any help thank you libbygirlxxx

my guess is that John Beckett and Jane Stockton were not married and used both their names.
There is a John Beckett and a Jane Stockton on the 1861 census, John at Middlewich and Jane at Burslem. John may have been married before to an Elizabeth (poss Elizabeth Stringer in 1860 Congleton) John and Mary are on the 1871 census together at Burslem without children, so if they did marry it would probably be before this.
