Confusion, please help!!!

Hi, My names Clare and Im new, not only to this forum but also at searching my family tree, I would be grateful if anyone could help with the brick wall that I have it, Basically i know my great grandfather was called Bernard Burgin and my great grandmother was called Elsie Lightowler, Not 100% sure of birthdates but around 1895 give or take a few years, I know they married in 1917 as I found their marriage certificate which says Pontefract, My problem is that on the same date but in Rotherham a Bernard Burgin married a Betsy Burgin, could this be the same people? if so why is the place diffferent? If its not then why do they both have the same surname? I did find a birth date for a Betsy Burgin in 1896, also according to the 1939 census Betsy and Bernard Burgin are living together but not a Elsie and Bernard, (there son David was born in 1939 so I presume they were both still together), Im so confused, please can anybody help me understand, thank you

C of E baptisms(the record you refer to), in general, gives the mothers married name, not maiden name.

If you look at the birth date of Betsie it is 1898. Ellie has given you the birth registration reference for Elsie which clearly states 1893 so Betsie and Elsie are not the same person.

Bernard and Elsie's son David's birth was registered in Leeds so, doing a search for an Elsie born 1893 living in Leeds with surname beginning with B and putting Bernard as another occupant in the house throws up an Elsie Bungei born 16 May 1893 and a Bernard Bungei born 22 Sept 1894. Looking at the image of the original page the name is definitely Burgin and has been mistranscribed.

I think the answer is - never presume that a name is spelt the same way every time. Mistranscriptions are rife. It's often easier to search just using the first letter, then look at all the possibles that come up.
