Hello waynec43 and welcome to the Forum

It's been a long time since I've looked at any of the COOK family. I know from memory that I was not at all sure I had the right James or the right birth or the right death.

First thing, I can't give you my email address until you have made 3 posts and your user name turns green.

More importantly, we had better see if we are talking about the same James COOK. I will have a look tonight and post details of a known event for the James in my tree.

I can't check a few things because the NSW BMD site is down again.

Are these both correct then as far as you know?

Births Jun Qtr 1840
Cook James Ashton &c 20 4

James Cook born 12 Apr 1840 Bap St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire
- parents James Cook & Anne

Do you have Anne's maiden name?

So we are talking about the St. Peters brickmaker:

Insolvency Index
COOK James - Mary St St Peters Brickmaker 27/03/1879 14695 30/06/1880

-------
Do we have 2x James & Mary A COOK in Sydney? Do you know which children belong?

Children
2771/1864 COOK CLARA A JAMES MARY A NEWTOWN
2714/1866 COOK CHARLES R JAMES MARY A NEWTOWN
4659/1867 COOK LILLIAS A JAMES MARY A ST GEORGE
5006/1869 COOK JOSEPH J W JAMES MARY A ST GEORGE
5192/1871 COOK CHARLES D JAMES MARY A ST GEORGE

5573/1880 COOK ADA ELIZA JAMES MARY ANN NEWTOWN
6520/1881 COOK GEORGE JAMES MARY NEWTOWN
14715/1882 COOK RUPERT JAMES MARY A PARRAMATTA

-------
There is a tree that has this for James:

James COOK b. 1840 Rochdale d. 1896 Granville
father - James COOK
mother - Ann WOOLEY

Death 13635/1896 COOK JAMES UNKNOWN UNKNOWN GRANVILLE ** 3 Dec 1896

Do you have the arrival of the Hunt family?

If this is correct ...

Charles Hunt & Ann Carey
6 Dec 1841 Bristol, Gloucester, England
groom's father's name: James Hunt
bride's father's name: James Carey
Batch: M012752

... then the family arrived on the 'Java' in 1853 and Mary Ann and sister Elizabeth were born Gillingham, Dorset.

Death 3536/1880 HUNT CHARLES - THOMAS DIED COOKS RIVER NEWTOWN

Thomas is an error then.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 12 June 1880 p.16
FUNERALS
THE FRIENDS of the late Mr. CHARLES HUNT are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral, to move from his late residence, Cook's River, on SUNDAY AFTERNOON, at 3 o'clock , for St. Peter's Cemetery, CHARLES BOOTS, Undertaker, Hordern-street, Newtown.

THE FRIENDS of Mr. JAMES COOK are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of his late beloved FATHER-IN-LAW, the late Mr. Charles Hunt, to move from his late residence, Cook's River, on SUNDAY AFTERNOON, at 3 o'clock, for St. Peter's Cemetery.

Death 20028/1919 COOK JAMES - JOSEPH - HANNAH - PENRITH ** 28 Jul 1919

The parents don't agree. Are they both wrong or is the baptism the wrong one?

Is the tree totally wrong? It says James died in Granville and therefore didn't remarry.

I don't know what to believe. I don't have copies of any of the NSW certificates apart from the marriage I posted.

Dave,
I have several pages of info on James. His parents are Joseph Cook and Hannah Cook(Wilcox). If you would like I could send what I have if you could let me know how or where to send it. Did you know that James was largely responsible for the opening of south granville public school in 1888?

It seems the tree is totally wrong so I'll ignore it.

Do you have copies of the 1910 marriage and the 1919 death? Does it say how many years in NSW? Does it list both marriages and the children of the first?

I only have knowledge of the occupation as a brickmaker. I've been in contact with the stpeterscooksriverhistory people and they sent me baptisms of the children with dates that could not fit the known details from NSW BMD so I ignored those records. For example:

13/7/63 Clara Ann James Mary Ann Cook Brickmaker St. Peters

2771/1864 COOK CLARA A JAMES MARY A NEWTOWN ** 15 Jul 1864
