Coroners report in the newspaper

I'm trying to get hold of the coroners report for my mothers death. Her name was Eileen Wilkes (nee Vaughan) and she died 31st Dec 1977. I have her death certificate which states an inquest was held on 8th Feburary 1978. I've been in touch with the coroner for the Barking / Dagenham district who have said that the reports are distroyed after 15 years so no joy there.

I have heard that often most of the detail from the reports are printed in the local newspapers but not being from that area I have no idea what the local papers where and a google now shows that there are a lot currently.

Any idea how to progress this search?

Regards
Jen

The newspapers you need are the Barking and Dagenham Post, or slightly more peripheral Newham Recorder or Ilford Recorder

I am a little suprised that they claim to destroy coronors records after 15 years. Did you go to the Romford Coroners Office or the Walthamstow office?

Might be worth a follow up enquiry with a different person. The details of the file may be destoyed but the verdict and official cause of death are in the public domain.

It also might be worth asking the coroners office which undertakes they ussed for Coroners removals and then asking the undertaker what records they have. The CO-OP used to be a major business in that area

Hope thats of hellp

Hi Lady Flippers,

A quick phone call to my wife confirms what I suspected . In 1977 she was a reporter on the Barking and Dagenham Post. She is sure you will be able to look it up at their offices. If you care to let me have a few details of her death it is highly likely my wife will remember reporting the inquest as in 1977-1978 it was her job!! if the details are sensitive please send the details as a private message. She has an amazing memory!
