Can't find the marriage, other than the GRO Ref.

1871 RG10/4357/F56/p26

Newsome, Almondbury

David Ainley Head 35 Cloth Dresser Lockwood parish
Martha ASinley 47 wife Lockwood parish
Benjamin Ainley 17 son Woollen spinner Lockwood parish
William 12 son Scholar Lockwood parish
Richard 11 Scholar Lockwood parish
Fred 9 son Scholar Lockwood parish

At a guess I'd say that Martha was a widow when she married David and her children have taken his surname. It's either that or a very late marriage!

Disregard that 1871 Census in my last post as I've found the same family in 1861.

I can't find David Ainley at all in either 61 or 71 but in 1861 at 943 Newsome Cross, Almondbury there is a Martha Armitage, 37, a dressmaker, lodging with a Jacob and Sarah Barraclough.

Thanks Emeltee.

This is something new in my tree and I'm not sure I have it all right yet. I had nothing for Martha after 1861 until I got this probate record for her brother:

ARMITAGE Thomas. 14 February. The Will of Thomas Armitage late of Newsome-road in the Borough of Huddersfield in the Country of York Mason who died 5 January 1873 at Newsome-road was proved at Wakefield by David Ainley of Newsome near Huddersfield Cloth Dresser and Abel Armitage of Kilner Bank near Huddersfield Cotton Doubler and James Armitage of Newsome-road Cotton Doubler the Sons the Executors. Effects under £300.

With her married sister Mary's widower.

Thanks Emeltee.

Thanks Geoff.

I think it's the right Martha. Ages fit and Almondbury fits although 1891 has Huddersfield.

Interesting that the 1881 Census you have for David and Martha shows them with a son Richard born 1860, six years before they married, when Martha was a spinster, lodging with the Barracloughs. I don't think that is the correct David Ainley but instead the one I found in 1861 and 1871.

David a widower in 1866.

I have not yet looked for an earlier marriage.

I think I may have sorted it.

David Ainley married a Martha Dews (born 1830, Newsome parents John and Tamer). This is the Martha who appears with David in the 1861 Census

Death 1865 Huddersfield of Martha Ainley born 1830

David then marries Martha Armitage in 1866 and they are the couple in the 1871, 1881 Censuses etc.

Does that work for you?

That would work, same father and occ for David as in 2nd marriage..

Thanks Emeltee.

Thanks Geoff.

I'll check something. No maiden name for Martha on the 1860 bap for Richard on FS. Not on FreeREG.

A death for the first Martha?
