Searching for my Great Uncle Alexander Chalmers Davidson. Born 20 Jan 1881 at 34 Gourlay St St. Rollox, Glasgow. Parents James MacAlpine Davidson and Annie Chalmers.
My Grandmother Annie (Nan) Davidson, later MacGregor was his only sibling. There is no one alive in the immediate family to ask- both my mother's siblings died unmarried and childless before I was born and my mother died when I was 16.
I have him on the census in 1881, 1891, 1901. In a March 1899 London Gazette, he was listed as being appointed a Postman in Glasgow.
He was the informant on his father's death certificate of 10 Dec 1907 at 566 Keppochhill Rd, Glasgow. His mother Annie had died just a month earlier at the same address, leaving my grandmother an orphan at 16.
I have not been able to find any reliable entries for Alexander on the 1911 census, marriage, or death certificates. He could have stayed in Glasgow, or relocated to Edinburgh as his sister (my grandmother) did by 1921- if not earlier.
I did order a death certificate for an Alexander Chalmers Davidson in Aberdeen d. 9 Aug 1974, and although the father's name is James Davidson the occupation is wrong (should be Railway Clerk, not foundry labourer,) and the mother's name is Margaret Chalmers not Annie (although MY Alexander's father's mother was Margaret). DOB is off too- 2 Nov 1890 so 9 years off.
Wife is Jemima Duncan, address 43 Gillespie St, Aberdeen. He also died of the same cause as my great-grandmother Annie Chalmers Davidson, and my Grandmother Annie (Nan) Davidson MacGregor.
Granted the informant was his son, William Davidson so I do know if facts are cloudy they do the best they can- and my grandmother Annie (Nan) fudged her age by about 3 years on her marriage and even at her death my grandfather gave her age as 3 years younger than she was- and gave her father's name as Alexander Davidson (her brother's name) and the mother's name is completely wrong (seems he used his dead sister's name!)
So it's possible I have the correct certificate... but would like to have definite proof by perhaps even connecting with Alexander's descendants, if he had any!
