Hi all,
off a Tree,
John Davidson, young Englishman, went to Gympie where there was a gold mining rush. Uncle Tom Roper was also there. Tom’s wife Carrie was very ill and he sent word to Aunt Poole asking her to go up and help. Aunt was terrified at the prospect of travelling all night on a coach, but Elizabeth Alice, a brave girl of 18 eagerly offered to go. Elizabeth met John Davidson at Gympie. John was older but a real gallant. Alice was very pretty. They became engaged but Tom Curply had his doubts about the unknown Englishman.
They married eventually in Stanthorpe

He died 1911 Bundaberg age 70 - Trove has info but being transcribed.

Look for arrivals into Qld.
regards
Val

Hi Dave,
from your post...
Elizabeth Alice's mother was Emma Roper. I know of 8 Ropers but no Tom/Thomas.

Thomas Roper was brother to Emma Roper who married William Alfred Noble in 1850 Qld
Thomas Roper according to his actual Death certificate (6 Nov 1914 Lisson Grove Rd Wooloowin Qld age 83 yrs 4 mths 21 days. Parents James Roper a farmer & Elizabeth Wigg born Gr Bentley Essex Ul and 65 yrs in Qld).
Married 1 to Emily Ann Lewis at Moggill Qld 23 yrs (1854) then married 2 Emily’s sister Caroline Lewis (1859) Moggill Qld 28 yrs.
1 son with Emily Ann = Frederick Thomas Roper 58 yrs and 7 children listed for wife no:2 Caroline – deceased 2.3 males
1st wife Emily Roper nee Lewis’s death – Moreton Bay Courier Sat 29 March 1856
DIED.
At Moggill, on the 21st inst., aged 19, deeply regretted, after a lingering illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation, Emily Ann, the beloved wife of Mr. Thomas Roper, and second daughter of Mr. Joseph Lewis, of the same place.
The Brisbane Courier Sat 14 Oct 1922
THE LATE MRS. ROPER. For wife no:2 Caroline nee Lewis
Through tho death of the late Mrs T Roper (of Lisson Grove, Wooloowin) Brisbane has lost one of its oldest and well known identities, the deceased lady having been a resident of this city for 73 years. The late Mrs Roper was the second youngest daughter of the late Mr Joseph Lewis (of Gloucester, England), who arrived in Brisbane with his wife and family on November 3, 1849, in the ship Lima, which was the third ship of three that arrived in the colony under the auspices of the late Dr Lang, the other two being the Fortitude and Chaseley. In those days Brisbane was only a bush settlement, so Mrs Roper had seen its wonderful growth and development up to the present time. She was beloved by all with whom she came in contact, doing what she could to help others in a quiet and unostentatious manner. She is survived by four sons and three daughters, who deeply mourn her loss.
regards
Val

Hello Val,

Thank you very much.

What do the trees have for Emma? I'm sure they won't agree but one might have a reliable source for her birth/baptism.

Emma ROPER b. 28 Feb 1828 Bentley, Sussex - mother Elizabeth WIGG ?

or b. Ufford, Suffolk - mother Elizabeth HAWARD ?

or Colchester, Essex ?

Bap 14 May 1831 Great Bentley, Essex

Dave

I can't see any marriage in Queensland between a Roper and a Poole.

Tom is Emma's brother so who is aunt Poole?

That's funny. I did check the index yesterday:

1854 BM750 George Frederick Poole - Mary Ann Roper

That is a church record so event 1850 - 1859. ** It's 24 May 1849 **

It's not in the NSW index. That's odd too being before 1859.

Church Marriage BMA0761/1854 Noble William Alfred - Emma Roper

Emma Roper married, on her birthday, 28 February 1850 at Zion's Hill.
Can't find a notice in TROVE

V1850245 84/1850 NOBLE WILLIAM A - ROPER EMMA IS= Wesleyan Methodist Brisbane, Co. Stanley, Ipswich, Moreton Bay (QLD)

That is an example of an event in 1850 that is recorded in both.
