Thank you all so much!! I did get the original of the 1841 census from the library, and the birth designation for Stewart is an "S" and not an "I" as some transcribed it, so I feel he was born in Scotland.
My possible connection is a little complicated. My family descends from Robert Todd & Isabella Anderson, and their Son Matthew born in Warkworth in 1802 is my GG Grandfather. His wife I believe descends from Alexander Drummond and Helen Dyer, Dyet or Dewar from Scotland, and she was Helen Drummond born 1800 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Matthew & Helen apparently had their chldren in Scotland. I have a lot of birth records for children of Robert & Isabella and for Alexander and Helen.
The Todd's were shown as a potter, mugger, pedlar, stoneware merchant, a horse pedlar/trader and such. The Drummond's were hawkers, china merchant, Chapman pedlar, basker maker, and tinsmiths. So, it seems they were amongst Travellers and/or Gypsy Travellers. I have found quite a few baptisms of children, but not a lot of marriage records. I understand some in these groups may have performed their own unrecorded marriages.
The "Drummond" name was a surprise for our family and others I've connected with. We had family lore that Helen was a "MacGregor"!! After a lot of study, I now understand the "Proscription" enacted making the name MacGregor illegal in Scotland by penalty of death, from various times between the early 1600's and 1774. This might be the reason I found the family with the name of "Drummond", as I understand many MacGregor's did take that name?
Some of the children descending from the Matthew Todd/Helen Drummond marriage, were given the middle name of "MacGregor". Therefore, I've been studying and studying and searching and searching for the connection, which is quite elusive.
Recently, a person in England contacted me about this Stewart, who she found as Stewart MacGregor Drummond. His wife was a Mary Ann Todd. I can't yet be sure, but this Mary Ann could be my Matthew Todd's sister. It also seems possible that Stewart could be related somehow to my Helen Drummond.
The person who contacted me, explained there were marriages between 3 of Stewart and Mary Ann's children, with 3 children of an Alexander Todd. I think these marriages were in England. It so happens, that Alexander Todd is the older Brother of my Matthew Todd!!
So, it seems I'm finding a number of marriages, perhaps between members of the same travelling groups of Todds, Andersons, and Drummonds. I think I read somewhere that some of the travelling families arranged marriages for their children.
So, I'm researching Stewart in an attempt to try to find more information about the elusive "MacGregor" connection.
Thanks so much!! Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA, USA)
