Debtors prisons.

I have come across documentary evidence that a Cornish ancestor was imprisoned, in 1694/5, for "some years". It is not specified where, or for what reason, he was incarcerated.

In a document of a much later date it is explained that during the time he was in prison his affairs were managed by his brother-in-law who undertook to repay debts owed by the man's father and assumed by the son shortly before he was locked up. His estates were restored to him upon his release. It seems to me that the debts and imprisonment are likely to be connected.

I would welcome any information about debtors prison - how they operated, who operated them and, if possible, where any records may be found.
