deciphering a place in Scotland

hi all
not been here for a few weeks.....been a bit busy but now back to my tracing.....have come across a place that i cannot decipher from the original census and the transcription is wrong......on the 1851 english census.....one of my ancestors, Robert Carlisle, is living in Liverpool but is listed as being born in a place in Scotland called 'Eglipeld'.......i have tried googling it to see if the search would throw up some alternatives.....it did!.....then when ya click on their suggested alternative.....its not known! arghhhhhhh ........

i cannot find a birth or a marriage for Robert Carlisle......i did find one possible marriage on the IGI at St. Nicholas church, Liverpool but im not sure.......and without a maiden name for the wife....i cant go back any further with her either ...... definitely need some help!

Its hard trying to find some definite births for this couples children also....especially for their daughter elizabeth who is my direct ancestor as on different census she is listed as being born in liverpool or scotland.....she was born abt 1845 and her husbands name is Joseph Lowe......any help would be greatly appreciated

I have had a look at the original entry and am wondering if the first letter could be an old fashiond capital I ?

Hi Athenalou,

It just might be Eaglesfield, which is about 10miles north west of Gretna Green, and the same distance south east from Lockerbie.
Say eaglesfield to yourself in a deep scottish accent, and it could be heard as Eglesfield and written as such.

[merged]Have had a look at the census entry. Is Robert a hairdresser? If so, his birth place is Carlisle in Cumberland.

thanx for everyone input.....Robert Carlyle's occ was a joiner......and i did think of both Eaglefield and Loch Gilphead.......but wasnt sure......i shall be having a look into this a bit deeper in the next few days.....but if anything finds anything b 4 then i'd appreciate the input thanx again all
