I am looking for the details of several women in Wiltshire who were organising women in agriculture in the Great War. Does anybody have information about Olive Awdry who lived in Manningford and got the MBE in 1920?

Hi,

You may have already seen this. Wikipedia has an entry for a Robert Awdry who married Olive Muriel Tosswell in 1913.

Marriage notice 31 Jan 1913 - Exeter
Olive Muriel Tosswell - fathers name Louis Henry Tosswill
Spouse Albert William Awdrey - fathers name Charles Awdrey

The marriage notice on the familysearch site has Albert William Awdrey. Probably a mis-transciption.

Death registration - 1976 - Dec quarter -Torbay Devon
Olive Muriel Awdry
Date of birth 10 Jan 1884

Her probate has her date of death 8 October at the Seven Hills Nursing Home.

Not easy apart from London Times to find newspaper archives later than about 1910. The Gale Collection is mainly 1800s.

Hawkswell House, south of the church, was built in brick in 1914–1920 for Robert Awdry, to designs of Arthur Campbell Martin (who also designed additions to Dauntsey's School, West Lavington). 0524c2b789c407800cd1b1512f57af49f50cc60c.jpg img_0_0_hd.jpg Awdry, a cricketer and county councillor who was chairman of Wiltshire County Council from 1946 to 1949, lived here until the house was commandeered by the War Office in 1941.

Had a hunch that Robert William maybe related in some way to Wilbert Vere Awdry the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine. Looks like his is.
Robert William Awdry born 20 May 1881, father Charles Awdry, ( 1847), mother Margaret Helen Moberly, (1852), married 20 APR 1876, Hampshire.
Charles Awdry. father Sir John Wither Awdry, (1795), mother Frances Ellen Carr, (1821), married 24 Jul 1839, Poona, Bombay, India. Charles Awdry was also the brother of Vere Awdry, (1854), who later became Reverend Vere Awdry, he married Lucy Louisa Bury. They had 2 sons, George Edward Vere Awdry, (1916), and Wilbert Vere Awdry, (1911), who became Reverend W Awdry the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine .
I hope my hunch is correct :).
