Hi Folks,
Anyone out there researching the name Donaldson from the Midlothian area.
My gr.gr.grandfather was Alexander Donaldson, gr.gr. grandmother was Sarah Allan, i'm not 100% sure if they were ever married as their daughter, my gr. grandmother was born under the surname of Allan ( Grace ). I do know Sarah went on to marry a William Swan. In the census returns Sarah is always with her parents Andrew & Grace Allan, untill she married William Swan. Can't find any trace of them getting married on Scotlandspeople.
The sticky part is that Grace Allan Donaldson's ( as she was eventually called ) Marriage cert.,on Scotlandspeople states her parents were Alexander and Sarah Donaldson, m.s Allan.
Info i have on Alexander Donaldson is, he was a baker and census returns that i think match are.
1861 Baker 20, living with mother.
1871, 30, Moved to Kelso with mother.
1881, 37, Prisoner, Edinburgh.
1891, 48, Poorhouse Edinburgh.
1901, 59, Living in a mens hostel in West Port, Edinburgh.
Any info on this man would be welcome .
Would be interesting to find out what he was in prison for and,for how long. As between 1871 and. 1891, theres a possibility he could have done 20 years.
Cheers Iain
