I was just having a fleeting look at the petty court sessions for Buckinghamshire and came upon this entry.

Easter Session. 26/04/1688

Robert Roberts
William Ives (could be a rellie)
Richard Stock
John Askew

The preceeding names were fined 3s and 4d each (which is about 17p. now) for ...............

Putting dung in the highway at Burneham (Nr.Slough) Buckinghamshire.

I wonder how much 3s/4d (17p) is worth in todays money.

In 2008, £0 3s 4d from 1688 is worth

£26.49 using the retail price index.
£240.41 using average earnings.

I thought it would be more than that, but £240 is a weeks wages for some people.

I wonder what the fine would be now for dumping dung in the same manner.
I know where I would like to dump it.
