Hello juliejtp,

This is a possible death for Emily:

Deaths Mar 1887
Duval Emily Ann Barton I. 8c 426

I can't find a death for Norris. Son Charles Allen may have already gone to Australia. I can't find his birth in IGI or FreeBMD. And, I can't find him in the shipping records yet. He married in NSW in 1912 and he died in 1937:

#19223/1937 DUVAL CHARLES ALLEN NORRIS EMILY ANN WOOLLAHRA

Hello juliejtp,

It looks like the family minus Emily went to Australia. I have a death in NSW for Norris and for a son Norris:

20938/1933 DUVAL NORRIS CHARLES 8O YRS ROSE BAY WOOLLAHRA

43/1913 DUVAL NORRIS NORRIS EMILY A SYDNEY

Births Jun 1882
Duval Norris Chorlton 8c 687

Perhaps they went to Australia after the death of Emily in 1887 and therefore are not in the 1891 census?

Norris b. abt 1853
Charles Allen b. 1875
Norris b. 1882

and probably other children.

I'll search the shipping records again looking for Norris.

Hi Dave, Found this chap on the unassisted passenger list.

Mr Novies Duval
Port of arrival Sydney New south Wales
22 Dec 1890
Vessels name Oruba

Could it be a mistranscription of Norris, though cant find any other Duval travelling on this vessel.

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you. The date fits but it's curious because I have three deaths in NSW that I can fit into the family and others that so far I can't. I wonder if that is father or son? Somewhere there should be another Norris and a Charles Allen and possibly more.

I did find one DUVAL family but way too early and no names that fitted.

Regards,

Dave

Hi DaveHam,

What is your interest in the family? Some friends of mine are distant relatives and we were just at the grave the other day. Norris and his two sons Norris jnr and Charles are buried together. They were on the 1881 census in Manchester - not 1891.

The passenger lists are a little more confusing. Have you found out anything else?

Hello MimiZ,

Thanks for replying. This is my connection. Charles Allen's mother-in-law is Jane SANDS, born about 1848 don't know where, who married Charles Thomas ANDERSON. One of her brothers is my GG grandfather. I can't find a death for Helen Agnes.

Assisted immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle, 1844-59
Surname Firstname Events Age Remarks Vessel Year Reel
SANDS William 38 and family Diana 1849 2135, 2459
SANDS Katron 34 and family Diana 1849 2135, 2459
SANDS James 14
SANDS Margaret 13
SANDS Elizabeth 11
SANDS William 6
SANDS Jane 1

The first three children were born in Dunfermline and the births are easy to find. No birth record has yet been found for William or Jane.

I've had no more luck searching shipping records on-line. I'm in SE Asia and won't be back home in Sydney for about 10 more months. I have lots of queries that require viewing of the immigration reels at NSW State Records.

Could you please tell me what cemetery they are buried in.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

This is a little confusing for me now. Charles Allen married Helen Agnes Anderson, Helen died in 1983 at the age of 99 - her parents were Charles Anderson and Mary Jean Robertson - not Jane Sands. Where did you get info about Helen's mother-in-law and the connections? Do you have a family tree?

I am in Sydney at the moment and have been into NSW library a couple of times. Funnily enough I was working in Bangkok last year. What are you doing over there?

Hello MimiZ,

Well now! I'm confused too now. I'm now retired so I'm living 30 km out of Bangkok.

I have looked for a marriage of a Charles ANDERSON to a Mary ROBERTSON and for the birth of a Helen ANDERSON to a Charles and Mary but can't find either entry in NSW. Do you know where and when these events took place?

A researcher of the SANDS family who has most of the certificates etc... gave me the info. I can find this birth in NSW:

269/1886 ANDERSON HELEN A CHARLES JANE SYDNEY

Dave

Hello,

Am I confused because I'm retired :2fun:
or retired because I'm confused?

I've made no further progress in solving this problem.

Regards,

Dave
