I have lost two Ebenezer Bruntons. Both in Selkirkshire in 1841 but can't find after that.

Ebenezer Brunton weaver, Dunsdale Selkirk born in County aged 50

and prob a relation

Ebenezer Brunton HLW Paton Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire aged 1825

From Ebenezer juniors siblings he was probably born in Melrose

Can anyone find either in 1851

Hi

Not a lot, but on Scotland's People (I'm not a paying subscriber) there is one death that matches an Ebeneezer Brunton in Selkirk, 1845.

Hope this is of some help.

I have located one of them

the 1841census shows EB aged 50 so born 1791 ( remember ages are rounded) a weaver at Dunsdale Selkirk ( 1841 P778 book/folio 3 page11)

and E B aged 16 so born abt 1816 HLW Weaver Apprenticr Selkirkshire living with widowed mother Janet and sibs Agnes, Thos, Wm and Margt.

by the way HLW is short for Hand Loom Weaver

Then from scotlands people Parish records there is a burial of EB 13 august 1845 a weaver aged 60 at Dunsdalehaugh

I am sure allowing for approx ages he is he first one above.

Still looking for the younger one

Well all I can say is that I would have preferred him to hang on until 1855 so I could have got his parents!:D

Thanks for looking. Don't know where the younger one went.

There is a record in Selkirk that reads

Admission of Ebenezer Brunton, weaver in Selkirk, son of James Brunton in Grieston as a Burgess.

This is dated 10 October 1808

http://www.calmview.eu/HUBCAT/CalmView/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=D/46/2/6&pos=13

You may now have his father but tracing a birth certificate is doubtful. ALL baptism records are missing from Traquair between 1777 and 1786, and I cannot see an Ebenezer on Scotlands people prior to this.

An Ebenezer Brunton died in Selkirk on the 13 August 1845

I am going down to Hawick Hub sometime this week so will grab a copy if I can.

There is a note on the Traquair register that simply states

"Baptisms from 1777 to 1787 seem to be a wanting"

Only James Brunton (profession, a taylor) around that time having children was living up in Kirkhope, married to a Christian Boyd. These births were registered at Yarrow.

Last reply as this site is TOO painful to use.

If

"Admission of Ebenezer Brunton, weaver in Selkirk, son of James Brunton in Grieston as a Burgess."

is correct, we (or rather I) know the Bruntons who were residing up at Grieston at this time

I know James Brunton, elder and younger, rented tacks of land at Grieston in 1697, they had rented land in Caberston and Grains in 1688. In 1645 Robert Brunton rented land in Seithope (Seathope) - the next tack to Caberstongrains (as it is called now).

It could be assumed (probably wrongly) that the line went

Ebenezer, son of James, (son of James?), son of Robert.

How on earth you can prove that beyond a doubt is anyones guess.

If you want a copy emailed of that document then PM your email address.

perhaps the fact you are using two different user names wouldn't help.
In the interests of safety members first three posts may be delayed appearing on the site as they have to be moderated, and all the features of the site are not available until these three posts have been accepted. Unfortunately because you are using a different user name than for your first two posts, you will have to make another post under Bruton or another two under Brunton before all the features are available to you.
