Hi ladies

I've been looking for non-conformist records among parish records for Ebenezer's baptism, and have ordered a film for Norham which includes dissenters and non-conformists, so may find something useful there (when it arrives!).

I'll also follow up with the Berwick records office, to see what they have.

I have found Ebenezer's son George on the 1841 Norham census, he was the schoolmaster at Thornton for many years. His son Ebenezer appears in later census records as a grocer in Edinburgh, so recurring occupations in the family.

Yes and interesting that Ebenezer jnr took a bride from Duns. Family connections there?

In Northumberland many Presbyterians crossed the border into Scotland to marry. Specially printed registers were introduced to record the marriages; the entries included bride and grooms names, condition (e.g. bachelor, spinster), parish of abode, place of marriage, whether married by banns or licence, and the signatures of the bride, groom, vicar and at least two witnesses. These registers continued until 1837 when civil registration began.

In 1798 the Bishop of Durham (Bishop Barrington) passed a decree stating what information was to be included in the baptism and burial registers kept in his diocese, which included Northumberland. These details were; date of birth and baptism, abode of the family, child's name, father's name, occupation and native parish and mother's name, native parish and her parent’s names.

The village of Cornhill lies on the Scottish border, approximately 1½ miles from Coldstream, and so is on the northerly edge of Northumberland. It was in ancient times known as Cornell. The parish carries the same name and incorporates Old and New Heaton and Tillmouth

Hi Ellie

Yes, have looked at all the Norham MIs on the link you posted for Davidson/Davison, and also for Hume/Home - unfortunately nothing obvious that links back any further than we have already.
Son George and family are there as well as others around the same sort of time who may be connected, so more work to be done on these.
