I am trying to find ancestors (including parents and possible siblings) of Edith,my paternal grandmother.

Marriage and death certificates give her as born 1886,but cannot find an Edith Margaret Martin in the birth indexes for 1885-1887.

She married Samuel Elsey (1886-1981) at Hernhill Parish Church,Faversham,Kent on 25th December 1913.Have looked at local papers for a possible report on the wedding but found nothing.

They had one child Samuel George Elsey (1917-1975).

She died suddenly on 21st May 1936 following a fall at her home in Canterbury,Kent.I traced reports of her death and subsequent funeral in the local paper, which gave a detailed list of mourners, but found no mention of possible members of her family.

She was possibly born Kent,Surrey or Sussex and her fathers name was George Martin,a clerk.Checking the 1891 and 1910 Census have revealed no likely matches.

Two years of searching have yielded nothing, any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Not been able to pin her down on the census or George. There is one on the 1891 census Edith M Martin born abt 1889 Pembury Kent a nurse child with a family called Brooker and on the 1901 census she is with the Brookers as adopted daughter. What about the witnesses on her marriage certificate do they reveal anything.

Hi juliejtp
Many thanks for your reply.
Witnesses at the wedding was one avenue I had explored. This was simple they were Frank Elsey (a brother of Samuel) and Ernest Alfred Jones (husband of Mary Elsey,a sister of Samuel).
No witnesses from the Martin side of the family, regrettably.Ediths father George Martin was not recorded as deceased on the marriage certificate.
Regards

Hi prefabkid,

I've been going through a box of my grandparents and great grandparents pics/letters for the past few weeks. So far my research has me believing that that Edith Margaret Martin would be my great great great grandmother, but I could be mistaken. My great grandmother was Margurite Martin was married to Samuel Norris. I have tons of pictures and notes from the family all the way back to the early 1900's that has helped me figure out the entire family tree. Which I would love to share. Email me if you'd like to talk more :)

Hi Ashley
After several years of searching using, amongst other records, local newspaper reports of her untimely death and details of her subsequent funeral I have finally traced my Edith Margaret Martin - my paternal grandmother.
She was born 1883 Greenwich,London and married my grandfather Samuel Elsey b.1886 Horley,Surrey in 1913.Her parents were George Martin b.1845 Chatham,Kent and Susannah Waters b.1850 Chelsea,Middlesex and great grandparents John Martin b.1812 and Harriet Scudder b.1805.
If your Edith Margaret Martin was your 3x greatgrandmother I would assume she was born before 1883,is this so?
Most of my tree is on Genes Reunited site and could open the tree if you are a member. If you want any other details please contact me.
Regards
Ron

Hi Ron,

I do not have genes united, but I would love to take a look at your family tree. I'm new on here and not sure how to contact you directly, so if you could do so that would be great.

I'm going to go through pics again tonight to try and get to the bottom of this.
I do have a couple of pictures of a baby named Ron, which could just be coincidental but would be neat if it was you!
