I am trying to trace a records for the parents of Edward Albert McClure. I have a date of birth of 25/4/1852, but can find no record of his birth. There is a suggestion that he spend his first 9 years in an London orphanage. I have details of his military career: Enlisted in the Ist Battalion Genadier Guards as a boy aged 91/2, service number 1290 31 Oct 1861. Promoted to Private 30 April 1867, and appointed Drummer on 7 Nov 1868. Discharged on medical grounds on 10 July 1872, suffering from Phthisis Pulmonalis (basically Tuberculosis of the lungs).

The Grenadier Guards suggest that his father was William McClure, who served 24 years in the army, discharged in 1852, and served in Canada between 1838 and 1842 in the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, this qualified his son for enlistment at the age of 9 years old. but I have no documentary proof. The records are missing on Findmypast.

Questions how do I find birth records for Edward Albert and orphanage records.
How do I find the necessary evidence about William McClure to confirm him as the father? Is this the same William McClure who was born in Manchester in 1809?

there's only one census where Alfred could be found on a census with his parents. He was born 1852 and in 1871 was in Barracks at Windsor, being discharged Jul 1872.

If and its a big if, he was in a home for some reason it could be he had a different name, - Christian, Surname or both

there is this birth record
William Henry McClure born 22.2.52, bap 28/3/52 in Catherine Squ, Artillery Place Woolwich. His father was William a Gunner in the R. Artillery and his mother was Margaret

I haven't found him in 1871

Thank you for this information, I have already got the wedding certificate and all the census data, unfortunately knowning this does not help establish any real details about his parent other than confirm his fathers name. I have so far tracked down over 30 possible William McClure's my best guess is teh one born in 1809 bu I need something to tie the two together.

Thank you - I can discount this record because I am reliably informed that to be recruited at the age of 9 into the Grenadier Guards his father would have been a Guardsman too. So the regiment is wrong. I will try to foolw thought this line a bit more to see where it leads.
