Hi all.

I'm researching my husbands side of the family here in Australia, and I've traced his ggg-grandfather, Edward McKenzie Scott back to Scotland. I'm trying to find a birth record for him, but having no joy. Can anyone help??

Edward McKenzie Scott b. abt 1833 Edingburgh
Parents - Charles McKenzie Scott and Sarah Hague

He came to Australia some time before 1860 and he married Emilie Schroeter in 1860 in Rockhamton, Qld.

He was a very successful builder and one the early pioneers of Mackay, Qld.

I'm looking for any info on his Scottish roots really. Having a bit of trouble tracking him and his parents down!! Can anyone help??

Hello Clare,

Do you know when and where Edward died?

So far I can't see his arrival in Australia. Do you have any idea if he came alone or with siblings or parents?

So far I can't find his birth/baptism or his parents marriage.

So far I can't find Edward in the 1841 census in England or Scotland.

Regards,

Dave

How curious. Look at the mother's name on that death reg and look at the name of his spouse.

Where does Sarah HAUGE fit in? Charles' first spouse? Perhaps Charles married 2nd time in Qld. ???

Or perhaps the mother's name on the death reg is an error? Father of spouse?

Thanks for all your replies!!

I prob should have posted a bit more info. Edward died in 1920 in Queensland. I've visited his grave. It confused me also about Theodore Schroeter on his death cert, but that is his father-in-law. Don't know why they have his as his mother's name!!

I've not found any record of his journey into Australia.

I've also not found any record of him on the 1841 census.

I've not found any record of his parents either, and don't know if he had any siblings or who he came over here with.

Just a mystery!!

Hi Dave,

I have his marriage cert (1860) which states his parents' names and it states he was 25 then, but that makes it 1835 he was born. I have a copy of the book called 'early pioneers of mackay' which he is in and it states he was 'born about 1833'.

Clare does the marriage cert. state how long he has been in the country for?
Some do which can be handy to narrow dates down a bit when looking for their arrivals.

Hello Clare,

Ok, thanks.

I have looked on ScotlandsPeople and I can't find his parents marriage.

I searched for a birth for Ed/Edward SCOTT with father = Charles born anywhere in Scotland 1825 to 1840 and found nothing.

Hello Clare,

Being around 1833-1835 not all birth/baptism records are on SP. I can't find some of those in my tree.

I did hope to find him in 1841 census but seems not transcribed as SCOTT or not on FreeCEN.

Someone else might have some luck with 1841 and 1851. He probably arrived in Australia after 1851.

Do you know what trade/occupation he had in Queensland?

Yes he was a builder. Very successful in Mackay, according to the book 'early settlers of mackay', and was one of Mackay's pioneers.

On his marriage cert, it states that his father was also a builder.

He married Emilie in Rockhampton in 1860 so I assume he prob would have entered Australia some time between 1850 and 1860. Just can't find the record....

Hello Clare,

Yes, no sign in shipping records. No sign of birth/baptism, no sign of parents marriage and no sign in census.

A real brick wall like some I have.

thanks again for looking, Dave. Brick walls are very frustrating.

I was hoping to trace where he came from in Edinburgh etc as we are going to the UK for 3 months in May and Hubby wanted to take a trip to Scotland to visit where his ancestors came from.

We'll keep searching. Something may crop up somehow.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Mao,

Thanks for replying. Can I ask more about your relationship to Edward? He was your great grandfather? Which of his children was your grandfather? He was my husband's great great grandfather, and Edward's son, William, was his great grandfather.

As for the info I have on Edward, well, I am still at that brick wall about his time before he arrived in Australia. I have found out a bit about his time in Rockhampton, before he moved to Mackay.

What info do you have on him? Have you found anything out about his time in Edinburgh, and why he came to Australia? That is the key info I'm looking for at the mo, but any info is good info on the elusive Edward!

I am happy to exchange email addresses with you if you would like to talk further? And I am more than happy to share with you all the info I have so far. I have a little on Emilie, but not a lot.
