The builder of the hotel for the Archer's, was Edward McKenzie Scott. He came to Australia on the vessel "Rannelees" in 1854, and came to Rockhampton by the "Boomerang' on the 22nd September 1858, to build the house in Rockhampton of Mr. W. H. Wiseman, then Commissioner of Lands.

It must be something Dave, i cant find Rannelees anywhere.
Tho cant find the boomerang neither but yet found mention of it arriving in Trove.


I went through Gracemere a couple of years ago Clare, nice little place :biggrin:

I think the name should be 'Ramillies' but still can't find 1854 or SCOTT.

Also found this voyage but no sign of the return voyage:

Closest I can find is 'Ramillies' 1855 Moreton Bay but no SCOTT on list.

The name appears in the list as Ramillies, Ramillie, Ramilles, Ramillus. It makes several voyages to Australia, including Hobart, under different spellings.

He is not one of the crew:

He sure is a difficult fella to track down!! I tried to track down the lady who did the research on the Gracemere Hotel, but I've not had any success in getting hold of her. I just wonder where she found what she found.

I haven't researched much about Edward lately, but I've been thinking that maybe he changed his name when he got to Australia, or was even a convict going by a different name. I just don't know. And that fact that I have found nothing on his parents either. Hopefully one day I may break through the wall!!

Clare have you contacted the QLD state archives? If you email them his name and the name of the ships and the years we have they might be able to confirm the info for you.

I have found them to be quiet helpful and they have confirmed stuff for me before on passenger lists etc so worth a try.

Still nothing to confirm he was one of the 55 heading for Rocky tho

Your welcome Clare. Hopefully the archives can help and hopefully there will be some info on the list about him. Even if they can find him just on the Boomerang it should say what port he got on the ship in and that might help find his actual arrival in Australia in 1854.

I believe those particular reels are in the NSW Archives. Those reels are also held by the NSW State Library. The 'Ask a Librarian' service could be used. If they are only willing in the time allowed to view one reel I'd suggest the 2nd which is probably the 'Agents' reel. The first reel is probably the one transcribed on the State Archives site. But perhaps even an email to State Archives would confirm which reel is which. Only one of the two is transcribed. The 'Agent's reel contains stuff like the name of sponsor, the conditions on the vessel, the age at a particular date, the names of any relatives in the colony, the name of the person contracted to if any, etc...

The Queensland reels start with a M or a Z and are usually not in the 2000-3000 range.

Thanks for replying. Can I ask more about your relationship to Edward? He was your great grandfather? Which of his children was your grandfather? He was my husband's great great grandfather, and Edward's son, William, was his great grandfather.

As for the info I have on Edward, well, I am still at that brick wall about his time before he arrived in Australia. I have found out a bit about his time in Rockhampton, before he moved to Mackay.

What info do you have on him? Have you found anything out about his time in Edinburgh, and why he came to Australia? That is the key info I'm looking for at the mo, but any info is good info on the elusive Edward!

I am happy to exchange email addresses with you if you would like to talk further? And I am more than happy to share with you all the info I have so far. I have a little on Emilie, but not a lot.

My grandfather was Edward Martin. Most of my information has come from a report prepared by the Mackay Gen. Soc for a display in 2000 and also from correspondence with some of my mother's cousins, notably 'Chig' Hunter (McGinn, Minnie's daughter) in Mackay. I have also drawn a brick wall about Edward McKenzie prior to Rockhampton.
