The information that I have about my Australian relatives is very slight.

Edward was born in 21 July 1862 birth registered in Islington London.

He emigrated to Australia I don't know when and was married in Australia. I don't have the name of his wife.

I know of four Children

Alfred
Edith
Harry
Alice

Born in Australia

I am told that Harry was killed at Gallipoli. Alfred was also killed in the first world war but I don't know where or when.

I have tried searching for the war graves but have not been able to identify them.:'(

Any information would be great.:)

Julie,

Many Thanks for all the work the family tree which has the names on is a copy made by my father of one originally put together by my grandfather and I have found other errors in the names shown on it so wouldn't be supprised if Henry had become Harry when hand written they could look very close.

I have no idea where the original made by my Grandfather has got to!

:)

I will look again at the WW1 archive.

Thanks

Ed

Hi

I have found Edward's Death on the Queensland BMD

Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1909/C000578 Slade Edward Alfred Joseph Slade Elizabeth Jane Stewart
1914/C000672 Slade Edward Alfred Joseph Slade Ann Tills

My Edward's Parents as I have them are Joseph Slade and Ann Tills.

so he died in 1914.

But the Queensland BMD data base also has another Edward died 1909

I don't know if there is a way to find out which Edward was married to Jane Isabella MacGregor?

Thanks

ED

Hi Edward,

Would it be worth it obtaining the marriage cert for Edward and Jane?. Have also found Janes Isabella Slades death - 1903 father James MacGregor mother Jane Isabella Buchanan.

I found rather confusing instructions for obtaining historical queensland certificates.

It sounds very complicated to obtain them from abroad.

Think I shall give this a miss at the present I have at least discovered that Edward was in Queensland which I didn't know before.

Thanks

Hi Edward,

I had a look on the Queensland Goverment site (family history research tips).
The certificates look expensive to purchase but I've no idea what Australian dollars are in sterling. As to the info on the certificates, perhaps one of our Australian members will be able to help on that point. Also would Edwards death certificate be better to get (if you go down that route) knowing that the one for 1914 is the correct one. The address below is for the LDS Centre (family search) it may be worthwhile to contact them and see what records they may have.

I think that I have sorted out the family of Edward Slade Born 21 July 1862 who emigrated to Australia.

I have found his death listed in the Queensland BMD

Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1914/C000672 Slade Edward Alfred Joseph Slade Ann Tills

I have his father down as Joseph Slade his mother was certainly Ann Tills.

I have been looking for his children and have found this family:

Births
Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names

1886/C001293 Slade Alfred Joseph Edward Jane Isabella McGregor
1887/C001500 Slade Margaret Buchan Edward Jane Isabelle McGregor
1889/C001889 Slade Unnamed (M) Edward Jane Isabella McGregor
1891/C002135 Slade Jane Isabella Edward Jane Isabella McGregor
1893/C001729 Slade Henry Arthur Edward Jane Isabella Macgregor
1897/C001656 Slade Alice Ann Edward Jane Isabella Macgregor
1898/C001706 Slade Edith Dorothy Edward Jane Isabella Macgregor

Two of them died as babies
Deaths
Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1887/C000721 Slade Margaret Buchan Edward Slade Jane Isabella McGregor 1889/C000990 Slade Unnamed (M) Edward Slade Jane Isabella McGregor

Henry Arthur Slade age 21 in 1914 parents deceased next of kin AJ Slade. Henry was killed in 1915 Gallipoli Peninsular. The Notes I had been given also said that Alfred was in the war. Alfred Joseph brother of Henry Arthur was in the war his war record is also shown on the WW1 records for Australia.

Which corresponds to what I have been told about one of Edwards sons although I had his name as Harry

Henry's WW1 records show Arthur as having been in the third Machine Gun Battalion recorded as taking receipt of Henry's medals after the end of the war.

http://www.naa.gov.au/

This is the record for Edward and Jane's Marriage

Reg # Subjects family name Subjects given names Other party's names

1885/C000357 Slade Edward Jane Isabella McGregor

Marriage of Alfred Joseph to Elizabeth.
Reg # Subjects family name Subjects given names Other party's names
1909/C000496 Slade Alfred Joseph Elizabeth Jane Stewart

Births
Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1909/C001984 Slade Edward Alfred Joseph Elizabeth Jane Stewart
1914/C002026 Slade Alfred Edward Alfred Joseph Elizabeth Jane Stewart

Deaths
Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1909/C000578 Slade Edward Alfred Joseph Slade Elizabeth Jane Stewart
1914/C000587 Slade Alfred Edward Alfred Joseph Slade Elizabeth Jane Stewart

I can't find a death for Elizabeth Jane Slade

In his war record Alfred Joseph Is shown as a widower with no children.

So I suspect that this is his marriage and the deaths are his children but again this is just a guess.

Hannah Jane Slade is shown as Henry's Stepmother in his military papers.

Death Wife 1903
Reg # Family name Given name Fathers given names Mothers names
1903/C000566 Slade Jane Isabella James McGregor Jane Isabella Buchanan

this would if I am correct make this Edwards Second Marriage 1904

Reg # Subjects family name Subjects given names Other party's names
1904/C000260 Slade Edward Hannah Jane Milner

The only positive Identification is the death of Edward which gives his mothers name and is correct for my relative the rest of this appears to all fit together but I don't have proof to get that I would need the marriage certificate of Edward Slade and Jane Isabella McGregor.

Many Thanks for the help in finding all this information. :D

Alice Ann was my maternal great grandmother. THe family lived mostly in Far North Queensland and still do to this day.

Harry is a bit difficult to find, he lied about his age when he went to fight in WW1 so the date of birth is a bit suspect. He was shot and killed as he disembarked. Today is Anzac day and I was just thinking about him when I came across your posting.

If you want any information on Alice's decendants and siblings please let me know.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

Good to hear from you I would love to have the information on Alice's descendants.

I am descended from Harry who was Edward's brother.

I found Harry difficult to find as his name is Henry but is listed on my grandfathers family tree as Harry. but his Father Harry Edward's brother was christened Harry.

My Grandfather was Edward Harry.

If you want further information do ask.

always good to here from a living relative.

Thanks

Ed.

For a start there are too many Arthurs, Edwards and Harry's. I'm having a similar problem with almost every line I follow except the names change. Thomas and Samuel's are also starting to send me crazy.

So you are descended from Harry brother of Edward who married Jane. I've only just started researching this line as others have looked into Jane McGregors line already.

If we start with Alice Annie she was born April 5th 1987 in Freshwater, a suburb of Cairns in Far North Queensland. She passed away June 29th 1982 In Townsville FNQ of old age. Sharp as a tack till the end. She Married Thomas Samuel Bennett from Hobart, born 1891 and died Oct 27 1934. I believe he is buried in Gordonvale, a township just south of Cairns. They married in 1923 in the town of Innisfail, about 100 km's south of Cairns. THeir Children where Isabella (my dear Auntie Issie bless her) 1917-1994, Thomas Samuel 1926-1926, Iris 1927-1955, Ellen (1930 - )my Grandmother and still with us and Alma (birthdate not known but still with us). It goes down from there mostly I know about my aunts and uncles and cousins.

Now Harry. Great Gran always insisted his name was Harry Arthur and he was 18 when he died at Gallipoli. This puts his birthdate about 1896/1897 and not 1893 which is the only record I can find as well. Alfred Joseph has a birthdate in the family of 1896. So there is some confusion. I rather suspect Harry used his Brothers birthdate and somehow Harry's got attached to Alfreds as Harry was always said to be the younger brother.

My Grandmother, Ellen believes she may have some birth and marriage certificates and other documentation about her mother and grandparents.

Oh you think it's tough finding records for Queensland, try Tasmania where my other half came from. Now that's tough.

If there is any specific information you would like let me know. I havn't delved into Alice's siblings much as yet but I do have some information.

Regards

Your cousin Martin

Hi I assume that Anne birth date was 1897 and this was a typo.

the date in the BMD records is 1897. I had a date of 5 May but this was from a tree on the internet so not reliable.

Have you seen Harry's enlistment papers?

These show him as Henry Arthur rather than Harry.

Arthur's enlistment papers show him as 30 7/12 on 23/1/1917 when he enlisted.
