In 1881 Eli was recorded with his father and two siblings in Langport Union Workhouse, Somerset. His date and place of birth are tolerably consistent in subsequent censuses. ( Eiljah in 1891).

He appears to have been the third of 5 children of Heny Samuel and Jane (Culliford ) Coombes. Their children were born/baptised in Somerton (Langport Reg Dist). I can find no entry on Free BMD to match Eli's birth.

Is it a coincidence that an Eli Culliford was registered in Langport Sep Q 1871?. I cannot trace him in 1881 nor his earlier death.

Any help in solving this riddle would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Ellie, for opening my eyes to the blindingly obvious! I now realise that Henry and Jane's first three children were all born before their marriage and registered in their mother's name. With Eli being the third born, I foolishly assumed for that his parents' relationship would have been formalised before his arrival without checking dates.
