Elijah Joel Tyack COLLINGS was born in 1862. His parents were recorded as James Staines and Christina McDonald Collings. He died, a bachelor, in 1932 when his parents were recorded as James Stain and Christina McDonald McGregor.
What influenced his parents to give him such a distinctive name? His mother's apparent Scottish heritage suggests, if anything, it came from his father's family. I would welcome any information about either one of these three individuals that might throw some light on their identities.
My real interest is in Elijah Teague, b c 1833, who is thought to have migrated to Australia after being acquitted of a charge of murdering his step-father in Cornwall in 1851 although no conclusive proof of him in Australia has come to light.
Elijah's father, William Teague also used the alias William Tyack and at least two of Elijah's siblings were baptised in the name of Tyack. I have yet to trace record of Elijah's baptism. Elijah had an elder brother, Joel.
I realise that it might be entirely coincidental that the names Elijah, Tyack, and Joel should appear grouped in both cases and appreciate that it is likely to be impossible to prove anything different but I felt I needed to ask for the views of others before dismissing the chance of some connection.
Perhaps the crucial question is who was James Staines? Any other comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
