Dave, would it be possible to look up John Cook from Manchester in 1851,61, 71 for John Cook. I am guessing he'd have been born around 1843. I know I have asked for a John Cook in Petersfield, Hants, but all the information after he arrived in Australia points to him being born in Manchester.

I note from a previous post, his parents were Daniel and Sally, an unusual name combination

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
about John Cook

Name:
John Cook

Gender:
Male

Baptism Date:
28 Nov 1843

Baptism Place:
Petersfield, Hampshire, England

Father:
Daniell Cook

Mother:
Sally

FHL Film Number:
6344469

Reference ID:
9

We would need as much known info to find him in Manchester as there are so many possibilities. Are his parents still as above

Yes, we know our John Cook and siblings and parents come from Petersfield or Sheet in Hants, but all references to the John Cook in Australia, refer to him as from Manchester. We are just trying to eliminate whether it is another John Cook we've picked up in error.

Repeating an earlier request, thus "would it be possible to look up John Cook from Manchester in 1851,61, 71 for John Cook. I am guessing he'd have been born around 1843. I am trying to find out if ther was a John Cook of Manchester.

Supposedly from Manchester, but nothing to support this.
South Australian Advertiser Wed 16 Feb 1887

IN MEMORIAM
COOK - In loving remembrance of my dear husband, John Cook, of Balaklava, and the dearly beloved father of Mrs William Williams, of Belalie East, who departed this life on the 18th of February 1886, aged 43 years.
------------------------
I just want to say here, that the John Cook born in Petersfield Hants, is definitely ours - his brother is my great grandfather. We have reason to believe he married an Elizabeth Ann - and the only surname we came across was Hatchard. John's son Frank died in West Australia,

The only marriage found was Marriages Q4 1863
Cook John
Ellis George
Foy William
Green Harriet
Wilkins Lydia
Portsea
2b 861

Marriages Q4 1863
Hatchard Elizabeth Ann
Pannell John
Seymour Anne
Portsea
2b 860

But any reference to Frank & John say he came from Manchester, not Hans.

In Trove, the papers show the funeral of Frank Cook, and my grandmother and great aunt attended (as cousins). So we are positive it is our Frank and John Cook - but why do they say John is from Manchester

And from the Advertiser, Adelaide, 19 Jun 1933:
OBITUARY Mr William Williams, of Military Road, Largs Bay, who died at Semaphore on Friday at the age of 83, was born at One Tree Hill...He was married 52 years ago to Miss E A Cook, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Cook, formerly of Manchester, England.

We (my daughter & I) are pretty convinced its our John & Frank (among other children), but when the family say in their death notices in Trove, that their John Cook was late of Manchester, it has sown a few seeds of doubt.

Hi Jood

I think the above probably says it all...

The reason I asked if you had something from Manchester to support your theory was because nothing has yet been seen to corroborate it and as far as I can see there is still nothing.

I know where you are coming from if there is doubt, it may be worth waiting a while to see if anyone else can see anything.

I quite agree. They always say you have to have proof of everything before you can claim the people are yours, yet everything points in our favour except the theory of him coming from Manchester. And death certificates are only as good as the information their relatives put on the certificates, be it right or wrong.

As luck would have it, I have just found a very old email from someone in Qld supposedly related to John Cook, and they mentioned they would get the death certificate - I have just written to her to see what I can find out. Meanwhile I guess we put the matter to rest. Thanks again for your help, Geoff.

Always pleased to talk through any point that cannot be confirmed. Genealogy is so subjective without the proof. I wouldn't necessarily 'put it to bed' without reason, sometimes persistence is the only way forward until it pays off, keep chipping away at it :)

I will. Hope to hear from the girl in Qld.

I won't tell you we also have a family of Cooks in Overbury, but they are pretty well documented. My grandmother was the descendent of the Hampshire lot, and my great grandmother's family on Pop's side was from Overbury, tho she herself was born in Barton St Mary, Glos. How lucky I was she had a name like Ellen Utinaya Heaven. She did cause a bit of strife later on as a new widow, marrying a much younger man, then emerging with another husband under whose name she was buried under, and no trace of the marriage, or his birth, or the death of the 2nd husband! We've laid that one to rest!
