Elizabeth Annette Hennessy

Hi All,

Researching Elizabeth Hennessy (my step grandmother) born St Paul Deptford, London 4 May 1883 and her parents Denis Joseph Hennessy and Mary Anne O'Brien.


I have record of her marriage in Durban, South Africa on 1 April 1905, plus death etc also in
South Africa. But can find no detail from May 1883 until April 1905.

Need guidance or help in establishing when she emigrated which I think would be a first step,
or any related record of her time in the UK.

Looking at the marriage one of the witnesses is a Mary A? Hennessy, so the whole family may have migrated to SA between Elizabeths birth and 1891.

I can't find the 1883 birth. Or the marriage of Dennis to Mary in Ireland or England.

I can't find any of the family in census in England.

Elizabeth A Hennessy is my in law grandmother and not step grandmother.

Some things are recorded differently including spelling of surnames.

Slightly altered transcriptions are ok but not that sort of image.

I can't see the family in 1891 census.

Going back and looking at the duplicate marriage register (there are 2 copies) the 2nd one which I didn't look at previous
has a clearer signature of the witnesses. One reads M V Hennessy not M A as I thought before. M V Hennessy could be Maurice Vincent Hennessy. Elizabeths death reads place of birth Natal, race European. The information is only as good as the informant knows.

Where did you get the parents names from other than the birth certificate?.

Hi,

There seems to be a link between a Elizabeth Hennessy and Maurice V Hennessy. Intestate records for for a Daniel Charles Hennessy age 26 policeman has his siblings - Edmund J Hennessy, Maurice Hennessy and Elizabeth Hennessy.
The testate mentions M V Hennessy. You can view this on the familysearch site. Maurice Vincent Hennessy was born Isle of Wight Hampshire England, parents Maurice and Catherine Frances (Katherine) maiden name Vincent. Maurice Vincent Hennessy died 1933 Hotel Louis, Durban. A familytree has Elizabeth Annette Hennessy place of birth Kwazulu Natal. You can find Maurice and his parents at Carisbrooke Hampshire England in 1871.

On Edmund Joseph Hennessy’s death notice 1926, gives his parents names Maurice and Catherine. Brother Maurice Vincent Hennessy is one of the executors.

Maurice Hennessy married Catherine Palmer Vincent - 12 Dec 1866 - Pietermaritzburg - Natal South Africa.

The place of birth for Catherine re 1871, taken from a transcription think should read Dorchester, Dorest. There is a Catherine Palmer Vincent christened 1845/Dorchester - parents Charles and Nancy. This family are on the familysearch in South Africa.
