Promoted to RN Surgeon ??
Cunningham John 1796

Don't know if that's the right one.

This was lucky.

John Cunningham was appointed a Surgeon in the Royal Navy on 23 June 1796. He was Surgeon of the Veteran at the surrender of the Dutch fleet in the Texel in 1799, and at Copenhagen in 1801; and in the Gibraltar at the attack on the French fleet in Basque Roads in 1809. He was married to Amelia, daughter of Dr Alexander Young, R.N., ‘a talented and meritorious officer who was for many years Surgeon of George the Third’s yacht’, and their son, Henry Duncan Preston Cunningham, was appointed a Paymaster in the Royal Navy in 1852. Surgeon John Cunningham was of an old family in Annandale, which traces its descent from a junior branch of the Glencairn family. He died at the commencement of 1848.
Annandale is a strath [river valley] in Dumfries and Galloway.

I can't find a Cunningham to Graves/Greaves marriage on SP.

No other Cunninghams with that middle name in Hampshire on Hugh Wallis site.

Deaths Mar 1848 CUNNINGHAM John [76] Alverstoke 7 24

Peter Miller Cunningham (1789-1864), naval surgeon and author, was born in November 1789 at Dalswinton, near Dumfries, Scotland, the youngest son of John Cunningham, a factor of Dalswinton, and his wife Elizabeth, née Harley, the daughter of a Dumfries merchant.
Peter was the 5th son.
