I wonder....
SMH Mon 25 Jan 1869
A new arrival, named Alfred Whitton, has committed suicide.

The Argus Tue 26 Jan 1869
INQUESTS
The city coroner (Dr. Youl), on Monday, held an inquest on the body of Alfred Whitton, who committed suicide on the 22nd inst. by shooting himself in the forehead with a pistol. Evidence was adduced from which it appeared that, in the earlier period of his life, deceased was in business as a bookseller and stationer for some seventeen years. At the end of that time he gave up business and went home to England, where he met with great reverses-his wife had to be placed in a lunatic asylum, and he lost his savings in trade. These things so preyed upon his mind that he had once or twice attempted to poison himself with laudanum. Having determined upon returning to Victoria, he took passage by the Essex, and arrived in Melbourne about a fortnight since. He was much depressed at not being able to get into business so readily as he had anticipated. On Friday he went to see Mr. English, in Swanston-street, with whom he had been intimate in earlier days, and who offered him a home until he could get into a situation. After some conversation, in which suicide was referred to, Mr. English went into the shop, leaving deceased lying on the sofa in an inner room. While engaged in the shop he beard the report of fire-arms, and on returning to the room found that Whitton had shot himself in the forehead with a pistol, inflicting a wound from which the brain was protruding. The man was not dead, and was taken at once to the hospital, but he had not been admitted more than an hour when he expired. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased committed suicide while in an unsound state of mind.

A piece in Trove re Alfred asking Annandale Council for permission to plant trees outside his property.

I have no Funeral notice so didn't know it was Rookwood.
