Goulburn Evening Penny Post (NSW : 1881 - 1940) - Tuesday 15 December 1896 p.2
Tuesday, 15th December
Before the Police-Magistrate
SUPPOSED UNSOUND MIND.
Ellen Spackman was charged on suspicion with being of unsound mind.
Constable Gandy deposed that at 10 o'clock that morning he arrested the accused in front of the police station, and charged her with being of unsound mind; he said to her " Where do you feel ill ?" and she said, " At times my head is bad-I am afraid it is some punishment on me for doing crocheting work of a Sunday, but that was a long time ago;" from her general conversation witness thought she required medical treatment.
John Spackman, farmer and labourer, Gurrundah, deposed that the accused was his wife; she was about 33 years of age and had four children, three at home; the last two months she had been bad off and on crying, and going about the bush ; she did not close her eyes on Friday or Saturday night; she said she reckoned she would have to make away with the youngest child because it had a Protestant name; she was in the habit of taking fits; about three or four years ago she was wrong in her head and was in the Goulburn Hospital.
Witness expressed his willingness to contribute something towards his wife's support.
Dr. McKillop deposed that from accused's conversation he believed her mind to be unsound; he recommended that she be remanded for a week for observation.
Remanded till the 21st.
