Elusive gr grandmother

I have been searching for my gt grandmother`s death with no success
I have tried searching under her married name & also maiden name but nothing

She was born 1850 in Derby and married George Nelson Grant.
They appear to have separated in or after 1881.By1891 George had a new "wife" but I have been unable to trace gt grandmother.

George remarried stating he was a widower in 1910,so she must have died around that year, but no trace of her in the death indexes, can anyone help please, it would be most appreciated, thank you .

Her maiden name was MARY HANNAH COPELAND, married name GRANT
I have tried both names from before 1910 and onwards

Hi Maudie,
Just a thought, but have you checked you definately have the right info for 1891.
The reason you can't find a death could be because she didn't die (or sepearate) and you have the wrong George Grant and new wife in 1891. I would double check your info for this census.

It is all too easy to make a mistake and start running down the wrong road. I have made plenty myself.

Other possibility is that George lied and still had a wife living. It happens more often than you realise. It has happened in my family. Trouble was divorce was not possible if you were on low income. Suggest you do wider sweep for her date of death. Of course if George was the wrong person her real husband might have died first and she remarried and died under another surname.

I know that my gt grandfather had a new "wife" named Annie this is detailed on the census, then in 1910 he married Annie Packer, stating that he was now a widower, so obviously Mary Hannah my gt grandmother had to have died around that time.
George Nelson died suddenly in 1919 from a heart attack (there was an inquest because he died out of doors) He was at that time living in Leicester.
He remarried in Derby where Mary Hannah had come from, so I wonder if she had perhaps died there? I have no other idea of why he was then in Derby

I can only assume that Mary Hannah and he had to have split up and gone their separate ways,(after or in 1881) but I have no idea of what surname she must have adopted and that is why I am unable to trace her.
