New Zealand this time for a family from Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. These 3 siblings are in the 1881 census at Innerleithen. Their parents have just died and their sister drowned in the Tweed in 1870. Another brother, John is in Liverpool in 1871.

Emma born 1845 Kent died in 1888 at Dunedin and is mentioned on the family gravestone in the Innerleithen graveyard. I found her funeral notice in the Evening Star 1888

I haven't found her on a ship and wondered if her brother and sister also went to New Zealand. Wm was born 1861in Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire and Harriet was born 1847 probably in Kent like her sister.
Parents of this 3 were John Gilchrist born Kirkcudbrightshire c 1811 and his wife Charlotte Wilkens of Rochester, Kent b 1815.

Any help appreciated.

May be of some use...

d. 29 Sept - bur. 30 Sept 1888
[Class 1] Lot 9/10 Block 106.

Just found a marriage for a Harriet Gilchrist to Archibald Dickson in New Zealand in 1885. Doesn't say where - is from FmP.

Emma's funeral notice says "leave the residence of Mr A Dickson, Kaikerai" so this looks a possible marriage for Harriet.

Very interesting! No familiar first names there but could well be.

Marriage for a Wm - kind of infuriating that there is no place.

Kaikorai is just west of Dunedin so that would be Port Chalmers (Otago) for arrival port.

A partial passenger list for this one shows none of them but the ship carried about 300 passengers.

Caroline
Ship: 984 tons
Captain: Hardy
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed Glasgow February 19th 1883 - arrived Otago May 23rd 1883

Searching arrivals to NZ is not easy. Very few arrivals have complete passenger lists.

Thanks Gibbo, Link worked fine. I might be making 2 and 2 add up to 5 then as there is no Harriet or Archibald Dickson listed in the grave. But then there are no A Dicksons listed at all and the funeral notice def said Mr A Dickson.

No Gibbo, all making sense! So how about William, can we find him. think he may have married Agnes Miller but not finding a burial for him.

Are there shipping records and where do I look. Not finding much on Atree. Is it only the papers and arrivals?

No age though, hard to say if he is the right one. All I have is marrying at the right time;)

Can't find him in Scotland in 1891 but the name is so common I can't look at marriages or deaths but know there are none in Peeblesshire.
