So, Maggie,
Can you just clarify for me.

Do we think the John and Martha Trodd (Catcheler) married 1912 are NOT our John and Martha.

And is this John Trodd, (the one with the twin brother Richard and father Thomas), NOT our John ancestor?

Sorry, just need to get it straight in my head.
Thanks Sarah.

Sorry, I will try to explain. The information I have is as follows:

Thomas Trodd b1727 Alverstoke, Gosport. married Elizabeth Cox. Their three sons were:

1.Thomas b1859 Portsmouth m. Mary Seager (they had at least 8 children one of them being the John Trodd b1782 Alverstoke, who married Martha Catcheler - NOT our ancestors)

2.John b1863 Alverstoke - no more information - possibly our John.

3.Richard b1863 Alverstoke - no more information.

I hope this helps.
All the best Maggie.

Hi Maggie
Shouldn't those dates of birth be 1759 & 1763?

We also need to remember that John said he was not born in Hampshire. Whether we can prove that or not is going to be difficult.

Sorry, yes. I'm 100yrs out. The John & Richard mentioned were born in Alverstoke c1763. As for whether or not John was born in Hampshire is open for debate. Did he fully understand the question? In 1841, John would have been well into his seventies, so allowances have to be made for some confusion.
I'm going on the assumption that he was born in Hampshire, but not in St Marys Extra area. There was another branch of Trodds living in the Romsey area of Hampshire at the same time, with similar first names, and I suspect there is a link with them, but as yet have not been able to find it.

Hello all, :)

Just thought I’d offer this information in the hope there’s new info in here for at least some of you. Much of this was old info for me, as it will be for most of you, but I’ve been scouring Ancestry and other places hoping to find a whole wealth of new data. It hasn’t worked but here are the full John & Martha details which I now have; old and new.

JOHN TRODD: born c1717 in HAMPSHIRE. Married: 5/02/1740 to Martha Bonny in Petersfield, Hants. (Information taken from: Petersfield Marriages - T).
Chldrn: Mary b: 1743. Thomas b: 1745. Martha b: 1747. Elizabeth b: 1748. (Taken from: Petersfield Christenings – T. Transcriptions by: lesleeztreez.com).
JOHN TRODD: born: 1765 or 1767? in WESTON, Hants. Married: 1792 to MARTHA (surname unknown) who was born: 1773. Confirmation and additional info from Maggie (FHUK); who visited the Southampton Archives. No marriages at Jesus Chapel in St Mary Extra 1753-1843; possibly due to a revolt within the Churches. Southampton Archivist stated folk married outside the Church or in the Town square or even never married. Thank you Maggie, all bits of the puzzle are very helpful!
JOHN TRODD: born: 1773 in HAMPSHIRE. Spouse: Martha (surname unknown). For 1841 Census living in Weston, Southampton, but shows John not born in the County. No known record of him for 1851 Census. (John possibly born or married in Warblington, Hants and married c1795).
JOHN TRODD: born: 1808. Baptized: 19/10/1808 in FARNINGHAM, KENT. Parents: John Trodd & Elizabeth (Whitehead).
Married: Martha Cuckow 23/06/1836. For this record John recorded as Jno Trodd. There is available on record a scrap of manuscript showing the names and marriage date. (Info via Ancestry.co.uk).
JOHN TRODD: born: c1771 in HAMPSHIRE. Married: 22/05/1794 to Sarah Pink (Pinks Family Tree) in Hursley, Hants.
Possibly a 2nd marriage took place 10/4/1812 to Martha Catchelor. Not known if John was a widower, divorced or bigamous at the time. Also not known if it was this John married this Martha or if we have yet another John & Martha couple! Records show this Martha was married in Hursley to a John Trodd born c1771; (this information taken from marriage records via Ancestry.co.uk).

Just a thought: as John and James, as names, are often interchangeable it could be that James & Martha also need to be considered!
Will be interested to see what you make of it all and I will keep searching! There may not be many Trodds but they certainly cause plenty of interest – and frustration!

Gemmas’ pal.

Hi all,

Have found on Ancestry.co.uk, a couple of Family Trees which seem to include our Trodds

They include Benjamin Trodd's parents John Trodd b1762 and Martha b1768.

They also go back one more generation to John's parents William Trodd b 1743 and Jane b 1743 and include their six children.

Don't know how accurate these trees are, or if they belong to any of you. (Mine is the Harrington tree.)

Can anyone confirm this info?:)

Hi Sarah,

I don't have a tree on Ancestry but some of mine are on my wifes tree.

I don't have any information about the parents of John and Martha so would be interested in this.

I havn't done much on my Family History recently must try toget back to it some time. Starting a new job has kept me very busy.

Thanks

Ed

Has anyone tried contacting the people who posted these trees?

I think we'd all love to know where the information came from.

Does it say where William or Jane were married or baptised?

Well I've been giving this some more thought. I put our brick wall to someone else who came up with an interesting suggestion.

There is a marriage for a John TRODD to a Patty DAGWELL 4th March 1794 at St Mary, Southampton.
However
There are no children baptised to John & Patty TRODD.
There is no death for a Patty TRODD before 1837.
There is no death for a Patty TRODD before 1842 on FeeeBMD
There is no Patty TRODD on the 1841 census.

So could Patty be Martha
The marriage is in the right time frame.

Any thoughts from anyone

I've done some more digging...

I cannot see a baptism for Patty DAGWELL
BUT
There is a baptism for a Martha DAGWELL, daughter of William & Betty of Weston 14th November 1773 at St Mary, Southampton

Have tried to contact owners of said trees, waiting for replys.

No Baps or marriage for William or Jane but their children are listed as John, Elizabeth, Rodger, Joseph, Jane and Amelia.

The Dagwell senario could be a possibility.

Will keep everyone posted as and when I find out more.

The baptisms for these children are in Hursley. There is a possible marriage for John TRODD to Sarah PINK in Hursley 22nd May 1794.

I will look forward to hearing if you manage to make contact.

Well..... some more digging and further help from some lovely people.

See this website

http://www.behindthename.com/name/patty

So Patty is definitely a pet name for Martha!

In addition to there being gaps in St Mary Extra marriages there are also gaps in neighbouring parish records so it's impossible to be sure that we are not missing something.

The witnesses to the marriage of John TRODD & Patty DAGWELL were
John Chitty
Joseph Cutler (witnessed many marriages so maybe a parish clerk)

So neither seems to be a close relative but we obviously need to check out John Chitty.

I'm happy to go with the TRODD/DAGWELL marriage...what do others think?

Thanks for checking that out hammy. Yes, happy to go with that like you Maggie.

Im sure I've seen John Chitty's name somewhere before. Will have to go over my notes.

No one has ever got back to me about the trees. Might try again.
