I have a few several times great aunties and uncles who emigrated to America and many gained citizenship of America.
When the Alexander family emigrated in 1849 the youngest of the current children was a year old. The second youngest was 3. Jane Alexander born November 1845 and Walter Auber Alexander born January 1848. Walter died in about 1925 and Jane in about 1908.
Even though they were England born they were technically American as they lived there from infancy and gained citizenship. Also immigrants make up America so if you lived in America from a young age and are a citizen then you are really a American person. It may differ slightly if you move there as an older person but if you gain citizenship then I believe you are in many ways American.
My 15 year old 3xgreat aunty went to America with her father, my direct ancestor in 1886. She wed in 1889 and died in 1961 and was a US citizen. I think she was very much American.
