Eric Heffernan?? Adopted? Cant find anything

Hi, had some luck on another thread regarding another family member. This time a bit more complicated. My mother didn't really know her father as he put her in an orphanage and by the time she got out he was out of the picture. His name could be Eric Heffernan Burke or Vincent. Mum thinks he was adopted by some family friend. My mum isn't close to her family so they wont say anything when i approach them :(

What i do know:
Birth - 1914
Married - Gladys Emma Lockwood 1936
Divorced - 1952
Death - 1996 Waikamete Cemetery Auckland nz

He had 4 Children to Gladys

Glen
Barbara
Valerie
Delphine

If anyone has access to any info about Eric and his parents, or anything i would be happy to hear.
Many thanks
Victoria

Hi Victoria,

You state His name could be Eric Heffernan Burke or Vincent.
Have you got your mother's birth cert? If not his name may be on that to help confirm things a bit.

You are right, Mums birth cert says Vincent and now that i have thought about it and looked it up so does it on the cemetery website!! Is there any other way to find more info before i use the last resort and order a birth cert for him?

Thanks for your help :)

I cant find a death index for him

It states
Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago.

As he was born more than 80 years ago his death should be online:confused:

edited.... Its ok i had a wally moment
Found his death index
1996/38015 Vincent Eric Heffeman 25 October 1913

On BDM Nz they have spelt Heffernan wrong, but it is in the Death search. Now i have his dob 25 oct 1913 maybe i order that?

If you can get his birth cert. and if its filled out correctly it should state his parents names of course:biggrin: but also where they were born etc.

His death cert. if filled out correctly should have lots of info as well if the informant of death knew him well enough to know the info.

Depends on what you are looking for as to which cert. might be the best.
I would probably go for the birth cert but that is only my opinion

Another member with more access to different sites might be able to find more info on him for you.

Interesting Dave. The Hoffernan name ....... a maiden name along the line somewhere maybe. Unusual second name otherwise.

Vincent is the last name i am presuming Heffernan is the middle name? Sure is an unusual name.. I am going to order a birth cert and get parents names, hopefully i can find out more from that. I know he died in a retirement home and only one of his daughters was there out of his family as far as i know. So therefore i dont think there would be much info on the death cert.. i think he must of upset a lot of people in his time. Thanks all for your help:)

Hi, so i got Erics birth cert. All it gives me is his mothers name Margaret Burke and that she was 23 and that she was born West Cive Hawkes Bay,no father.. So i think Eric must have then been adopted out to the Vincent family, my mother thinks that there was a Dudley Vincent in the family, Maybe Erics brother (adopted) so i am now going to try and find some more info on this recent info..:)

Hi Victoria,

What is Eric's surname on his birth cert? Burke or Vincent? And is his second name Heffernan on his birth cert?

With no father noted on the cert. i wouldnt be surprised if Eric's father's surname was Heffernan.

Yes his birth cert says Eric Heffernan ( first names ) then Burke. Hmm, maybe i try to find some info on Heffernan as a last name, not common i would imagine :)

With his last name been Burke on the birth cert. are you sure its the right birth for your Eric Heffernan Vincent fella? You know they are the same person?

If you know the above are the same person i would check into the Heffernan name. Could be nothing to it but worth checking i think.

Gets confusing at times dont it :2fun::2fun:

Sure does!! Yes it is def the right person, mum said his birth name was burke and then got adopted to a Vincent. Mums maiden name is Vincent. I wouldn't imagine also that there is too many Eric Heffernans around either. Yes i am looking into the Heffernan name now.. very interesting but worthwhile in the end:) i hope :)

And most adoption records etc are sealed which doesnt help any.
I could be wrong but i think if he was legally adopted by the Vincents there should be another birth cert. for him under the Vincent name also

Also the Vincent's could have taken him on and nothing legally put in place.

Hi, I don't know about NZ. but here in Aust. You have a birth certificate with your adopted parents on it, I don't know how far back that rule goes, but I have one for 1966.
