Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me please.

My ancestor John Henry Dunn was born 1853 in Wark Northumberland, he married as far as I can work out a Mary Ann Fairley born abt 1850 Maxwellbourn, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. They had 4 children all born in Scotland: Margaret 1880 died Newcastle Upon Tyne England (NUT) 1897; John Henry born 1882 (death possibly NUT 1954 but I don't know how to find out if he married? (He was not at home with the family in 1911, he may have been working away or married); James Hutton Dunn was born 1887 and died 1952 in NUT again I don;t know if he married; last child was Frederick Oswald who died 1916 in France (1914/18 war) his wife was Lilian Florence (I think surname was Kirk) but I don't know her family. Any help to fill in some of the gaps would be great.

Sorry Barbara

I did not explain and I might have posted it in the wrong place I think they all got married in England. They are on the 1881 census in Scotland, 1891 census in Wark, Northumberland, 1901 census Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1911 Newcastle Upon Tyne Margaret is not with them in 1881.

The father John Henry Dunn was born Wark Northumberland and the mother born Scotland I don't know the mothers family.

Thank you

Jan

Julie has been much more help than me!:D

However perhaps I can help a bit more now. John Henry Dunn senior's wife was John Mary Hutton. Very strange name for a lady but John Henry jnr's birth says this and so does the marriage in Troqueer in 1879. Do you have either of their parents? The 1911 census at Jesmond also says John Mary born Maxwelltown.

Barbara

I imagine the John in front of Mary is a mistake that has been copied again and again by transcribers. I don't know anything about the marriage in 1879 in troqueer can you tell me more? Also are there dates for the children's births in Scotland?

Thanks again

No it is not a mistake, that was her name. The actual marriage certificate and John Henry's birth gives her names as John Mary Hutton.

Scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the place to get these. I had a few credits so used them for John's birth and his parent's marriage (the date of which I got from John's birth certificate). If you pm me your email I will send them on to you.

The family is becoming more and more interesting I did not know James & Mary were her stepchildren, I wonder who his mother was?

Thank you for this its brilliant.

The more I look into my family tree the more different directions it takes me, we have people who died in work houses and people who left a will and had a business etc. It is fascinating and sometimes frustrating when I can't make the connections.

Thanks again

I am not sure if Costine was Margaret's maiden name of if this was a previous husbands name. John also has the surname Costine and was born about a year after James and 5 years before Mary (not John or Johan Mary in this census) the step children.

Or was Costine Margaret's maiden name and if so was John possibly born out of wedlock.

How would I find James & Mary's mother and father?

Thank you

Because James stayed in Scotland it would be best to find his death which would give you his parent's name or his marriage (I found him in the census with an Elizabeth) which would also give you his parent's name. But the marriage of Mary gave you her parents' names.. If you look at what I sent you it says her mother is Margaret Costine, previously Hutton and then her maiden name. this means at the time of marriage she was Costine but had previously been Mrs Hutton. That is why the census is strange saying they are her step children. Best to find James' marriage to back it up.

In 1851 she said she was married but John was not there. It makes sense for Mary and James to be John's stepchildren. I think she meant that as John would really be head even tho he wasn't in the house at the time?
