Famous "Currency Lass" Hotel

My 2nd great grandfather Spencer Barden is supposed to have owned or leased the famous "Currency lass" hotel at Hurstville along with Cricketers Arms Newtown, Riverview Hotel Cooks River and Cottage of content Hotel Cooks River, I imagine the time frame for these events would have been about 1855-1890s.

What i won't to know is, is there any truth in the family folklore that he had these Hotels and why was the Currency Lass "Famous"
