Feeling in the dumps!

Loyal Member

Feeling a bit deflated today and beginning to wonder if all my family genealogy has been in vain!
My sister's came to visit yesterday and my youngest sister said that our father had said to her that his mother told how she was unsure if she really was a Walton as her husband, our grandfather had been in trouble with the law and was offered a way out of jail, by joining the armed forces.
He apparently then went absent(deserted) and may have changed his name!
My problem now is is it true and when did it happen!
They were married in 1909 so I presume it happened before they were wed but by how much, what wars were on before then!
Boar war is most likely, I'm now so confused!
