Recently I have shown much interest in surnames and how they translate as such as Woodley, woodland by a field.

Cooper - needs little explanation. Occupational surname.
Hurst - woodland.
Smith - blacksmith, whitesmith, etc.
Hill, a hill.
Crouch, a bend such as in a river.
Lee - field.
Johnson, son of John.
Taylor - a tailor.
Benson - son of Benjamin.
Wright - a wheelwright.
Beck - a beck.
Wood - woodland.
Field - a field.
Fletcher - bow and arrow maker.
Slater - a tile slater.
Tanner - a tanner.
