hi everyone

i`m looking to find out if Robert Wilkinson, DOB 1886 stockton on tees and then married Lillian dinsdale 1913 in Stockton on tees, still continued as a fireman for the N E R after that date as i feel he went to war but im drawing a blank on his war records as i have no info on a regiment, given the fact that railway workers were exempt he could still have enlisted thanks for any help any one can give me on this

I've checked as many WW1 records as I can find, and no luck.

One for a riveter, another for a cotton weaver, and one for a collier......but none that suggest any being born Stockton.

I suppose you may, or may not know, that about 70% of WW1 records were destroyed in WW2..........the irony of it.

Did he have have any children in the war years, from his marriage until 1918.

If so, a birth cert would give his occupation...whether the army, or Railway Fireman, or whatever he was doing at the time of the birth.

i have an uncle who was baptised 1914 then nxt child was 1920 a 6 year span between craster st stockton on tees and sunderland st houghton-le spring county durham where the second child was born, really doing my head in just a blank cant find any war record looked in railway emplyees nothing

Have you researched any possible births that died in between those years of 1914 - 1920. There are many reasons for the gap in births.......but don't assume it was because of the possibility that he was in the Army.

What was the occupation of the Father on those baptisms.?

My Grandmother has 3 that died in between those years, and it if wasn't for my Aunty, I would never have known that for me too research. I found 2, the fourth is a mystery.

My Grandfather spent his whole working life on the Railways, from 1897 in Salford, then to Liverpool, then down to Buckinghamshire from 1912, until he died there in 1958, after retirement.
So through 2 world wars. On all his children's birth certs and marriages, up to 1941, he was a Fireman, then Train driver or Engineer.

There are two R Wilkinsons on the list and neither seems to be your grandfather

Hi im wondering if r Wilkinson from gates head in your Linc may be a poss as it gives loco as a dept he worked in however this could be tenuous

If he lived in Stockton and worked in Gateshead that's quite a daily commute -46 kilometres one way and that's as the crow flies!

i have a Stanley Wilkinson born 1915 middlesborough, an earlier birth in march 1914 would suggest a possible earliest date for the second birth as Jan 1915 both Stanley and (Robbie name of first child ) were first two children in there relationship there was an earlier one but different father so trying to find Stanley as that might give an indication of Roberts work situation army or otherwise however up to press cant find anything for Stanley

So, in part to prove an Army occupation, or otherwise, you may need to purchase birth certs, or find other possible baptisms.
