Frederick William George ARCHER b. ? d. 1966 ?

married 1937 North Sydney

Mona Ivy BARNES b. 1896 Temora d. 1985 Chatswood

Mona is said to have a brother 'Les' who married 'Phyl' but the closest I can find is Stanley Leslie BARNES & Phyllis/Phillis Mary HENDERSON

BARNES Stanley Leslie Death notice 13DEC1989 Death late of Crows Nest SMH 14DEC1989

BARNES Phyllis Mary Death notice 30JUL1988 Death SMH 01AUG1988

I'm wondering if Sands Directory or ER can help?
Or something I've missed?

Thanks.

Hi Dave

Certainly hard to prove as he was born after 1908, Stanley is too young to be listed on S/D.
No Stanley Leslie BARNES in 1936, one Stanley BARNES in Crow’s Nest.
If this is not him is it possible Stanley was born c1916 making him age 20, he wouldn't be listed in 1936? remembering he married in 1940.

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – North Sydney – Crow’s Nest
BARNES Stanley, 50 Hayberry street, greengrocer

If Stanley and Mona are siblings do any of the names below look familiar.

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – North Sydney – Naremburn
BARNES Ernest Albert Charles, 276 West street, labourer
BARNES Ethel May, 276 West street, home duties
BARNES Mona Ivy, 276 West street, home duties
BARNES Ronald Sydney George, 276 West st, C.Nest, gasfitter’s assist.

If Stanley did marry Phyllis this is her in 1936.

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – North Sydney – Crow’s Nest
HENDERSON Elizabeth, 1 Emmett street, home duties
HENDERSON James, 1 Emmett street, bricklayer
HENDERSON Phyllis Mary, 1 Emmett st, Crow’s Nest – home duties

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – North Sydney – Chatswood
ARCHER Frederick George William, 38 Gibbs street, labourer
ARCHER John William, 38 Gibbs street, labourer

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking.

Let's start with Frederick ARCHER. This is probably his death:

38137/1966 ARCHER FREDERICK GEORGE W JOHN MIRIAM ST LEONARDS

and possible parents and possible birth:

Marriages Mar 1894 Staffordshire
Archer John Burton 6b 521
Barton Miriam Burton 6b 521

Births Dec 1895
Archer Frederick George Burton 6b 418

His father's name is John so the John William in the ER could be his father.

Please see if you can find anything before 1936 for either or both of the ARCHERs. Thanks.

As for the BARNES, this is Mona's birth reg:

26097/1896 BARNES MONA I JOSEPH F ELIZA TEMORA

I have lots of BARNES in my tree but I don't have any of the others in that list with Mona.

Ernest Albert Charles was born in 1903 to parents George A & Ethel M. Ronald Sydney George may be another son born after 1908. The parents of George A are Henry & Harriet and they are not in my tree so not an uncle or great uncle of Mona. I can't explain why they would be together although there must be some family connection I've not found yet.

The info came from here:

ARCHER Mona Ivy Death notice 01AUG1985 Death late of Chatswood SMH 08AUG1985
...(suddenly) at her residence, Chatswood, widow of Fred, loved sister and sister-in-law of Les & Phyl Barnes, and dear aunt of their neices and nephews. Privately cremated.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Not having much luck here. Decided to list all ARCHER's below for 1930 & 1936for Chatswood only.

No Frederick George ARCHER, two George Frederick’s.

1930 and 1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – Robertson – Wyong
ARCHER George Frederick, Wyong, labourer

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – West Sydney – Rozelle
ARCHER George Frederick, 92 Weston road, labourer

I did a search just with Frederick. There are four Frederick’s in 1930 and three in 1936.
1930 Balmain, Narrandera, Peakhurst, Narrabeen
1936 Camaray, Peakhurst, Narrandera
(I doubt any of these are yours)

This is the only John William Archer in 1930, North Sydney, Chatswood.
ARCHER John William, 26 Neville street, carter

All ARCHER's in 1930 North Sydney - Chatswood

All ARCHER's in 1936 North Sydney - Chatswood
Ellen Mary Archer
Hazel Clare Archer
Mary Archer
Ruby Laura Archer
Albert Claude Archer
Charles Henry Archer
Frederick George William Archer
John William Archer
Percival William Archer
Thomas Archer

The Death notice of Mona does indicate Les to be her brother, and there is only one Les & Phyl Barnes marriage in the NSW marriage index. I suppose if you wanted further proof you could always get Les' marriage certificate, for his parents.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you. Yes, it is the only marriage in NSW that seems to fit for Les & Phyl.

I have some other BARNES queries so I'll do them in this topic.

This is not my man:

35628/1902 ARCHER FREDERICK W HENRY ELLEN M RYLSTONE
82590/1974 ARCHER FREDERICK WILLIAM HENRY WILLIAM ELLEN MATILDA

m. 16306/1934 ARCHER FREDERICK W SHAW BERYL BALMAIN NORTH
ARCHER FREDERICK WILLIAM : Service Number - N289319 : Date of birth - 30 Aug 1902 : Place of birth - MUDGEE NSW : Place of enlistment - MERRIWA NSW : Next of Kin - ARCHER BERYL

ARCHER Frederick William (Oscar) Death notice 31MAR2004 Death late of Northbridge SMH 03APR2004
ARCHER, Frederick William (Oscar) - March 31, 2004. Died suddenly of Northbridge. Loved and respected by all who knew him. Much loved by his wife Yvette. "A thorough gentleman".

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I have queries for two of Mona's uncles:

George J BARNES b. 1850 d. 1923 St Leonards ??

married 1872 Wagga wagga

Bridget O'BRIEN b. ? d. ?

John BARNES b. 1851 d. 1902 Narrandera

married 1871 Yass

Agatha O'BRIEN b. 1854 ? d. ?

Perhaps a coincidence. If it had been the same year for the reg and in the same RD I would have said they were sisters but...

Please see if you can find something that might help.

Thanks.

Dave

Hi Dave

It's a real long shot finding the O'BRIEN births, and whether they are sisters. I did find these two births.

V185413 71/1854 O'BRIEN AGATHA JOHN CATHERINE -
10103/1864 O'BRIEN BRIDGET JOHN CATHERINE MAITLAND

(have included this in case it's your Agnes)
1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll - Division of Bland - Coolamon Polling Place
BARNES Agatha Kindra domestic duties
(District of Wagga Wagga)

Do you know the occupations of George & John BARNES.
Going by the children's birth districts is it possible this is them.

1897 Sands Directory – Pastoral Directory
Name of Owner: Barnes Bros
Station: Mayfield, Wallundry
Post Town: Temora
Stock District: Wagga W’a

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. I'd say without spending lots of money on certificates it will be very hard to prove one way or the other. My feeling is since they didn't marry at the same time that they are not sisters.

The reg for Agatha is probably the right one because one researcher says 1853 so it may be Dec 1853 and 1854 reg. I doubt the one for Bridget because she married in 1872.

Sorry, I have no idea if those two brothers were in business together or not. They have three other brothers. Most of my current queries are to see if there is any info I don't already have. Sometimes I'm looking for a middle name to help find a birth.

Another sibling:

Eliza Rosetta b. 1863 d. 1935 Coolamon

married 1883 Wagga wagga

Stephen HALLORAN b. ? d. 1884 Wagga Wagga

Death Reg# 11419/1884 HALLORAN STEPHEN STEPHEN HONORA WAGGA WAGGA

Father: Stephen Halloran b. 1804 in Parish Melick, Co.Clare, Ireland d. 1881 , NSW
10902/1881 HALLORAN STEPHEN AGE 76 YEARS DIED BOMBOWLEE TUMUT
Mother: Honorah Finucan b. 1815 in Parish Melick, Co.Clare, Ireland d. 1898 Tumut, NSW
11664/1898 HALLORAN HANNORAH UNKNOWN UNKNOWN TUMUT
Children
1. Bridget Halloran b: 1837 in Galway, Ireland
2. Mary Halloran b: 1841 in Tumut, NSW
V18411440 61/1841 HALLORAN MARY STEPHEN HANORA
3. Thomas J Halloran b: 1845 in Tumut, NSW
V18451961 62/1845 HALLORAN THOMAS STEPHEN NORRY
4. Anne Halloran b: 1846 in Adelong, NSW
V18461887 63/1846 HALLORAN ANNE STEPHEN NONY
5. Eliza Halloran b: 1850 in Yass, NSW
V1850847 68/1850 HALLORAN ELIZA STEPHEN HONORAH
6. Daniel Halloran
7. Stephen Halloran *** can't find the birth in Qld. or NSW

I presume Stephen is shown in the correct place in that tree.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. No sign in NSW of a birth for Frederick or a marriage for his parents.

Seems as though Frederick is the only one with a death in NSW so he probably arrived alone assuming he was born in England. A possibility for his parents marriage:

Spouse: Mary Jane Bunting
Marriage: 8 Jan 1860 Lambeth, Surrey, England

Dave

Hello crankypants,

This from the 1881 census fits perfectly except for one thing - it's about 15 years too late. James and Mary Jane and son Frederick James and in Lambeth:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation
James HANSFORD Head M Male 29 Westminster Carver & Gilder
Mary Jane HANSFORD Wife M Female 27 St Lukes, Middlesex
Thos. Hry. Edwin HANSFORD Son Male 5 St James, Middlesex Scholar
Frederick Jas. HANSFORD Son Male 3 St Giles Scholar
Elizabeth HANSFORD Dau Female 1 St Anns Westminster

I have a rough birth date for Frederick of 1862 in my database which fits with that 1860 marriage but it's not the family in the 1881 census.

Dave

Hi Dave

Yes the family in 1881 would be a perfect match, also checked 1871, no luck.

No luck finding the family or just Frederick coming into Australia. Checked NSW, VIC, QLD.

Checked births in QLD, VIC, SA and nothing.

"RATS"

Hi Dave

Frederick & Emily HANSFORD had a child born in the Albury District, so this may could be Frederick.

1895 N.S.W Police Gazette
(he had some property stolen) and says residence of F. Hansford, State School Teacher, Jindera.

New South Wales Country Directory 1899-1900 (Hall)
JINDERA - SCHOOLS Public - F.J Hansford, head master

Now was Frederick born in Tasmania or did he arrive in Tasmania before 1881 then N.S.W before 1888 to marry Emily.?

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Yes, it fits. I've checked OzShips (Convictions) - 2x HANSFORD but no help. I love the database for Tasmanian passenger lists. You HAVE to know the vessel before you can search.
