Hello,

name: William Paulie
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 07 Oct 1821
baptism/christening place: , GIRVAN, AYR, SCOTLAND
birth date: 31 Mar 1821
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: William Paulie
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Mary Campbell

Niven GALT & Jean POLLOCK ?
Marriage: 29 Mar 1844 Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew

That should be Jane/Jean PAULEY/PAULIE b. Kilmarnock, Ayr, a sister of William b. 1821 who married:

William PAULEY & Susan McLEAN
Marriage: 16 Jul 1847 Glasgow, Lanark

I'd like a look up please for the GALT and PAULIE/PAULEY families in 1841.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

So far found 573/00 046/00 021 Cambuslang South Lanarkshire parish of Low Church: Nivin Galt age 20 occ. cloth lapper listed with Thomas Galt age 50 occ.Shoe M; Thomas Galt age 16 occ. cloth lapper and Margaret Galt age 17 occ. Thread /Fact.
Birthplaces are in the county except the elder Thomas is ticked as not born same county

Did you have Pollock just as a transcription Dave? I have looked at the image of the marriage register and it is definitely Pollock written there on the matching date.

573/00 009/00 019 Cambuslang South Lanarkshire parish of Paisley
This one is more difficult to read but there is a Jean Pollock lodging (or appears to be) at 6 Buchanan St age 20. Haven't deciphered the occupation which matches another lodger listed ? Buchanan age 30+ and they are in the household of Alexander and Elizabeth ??aird who have a 12 year old daughter. She was born in that county.
[Just to bear in mind}

Sorry I didn't find the PAULIE or PAULEY spellings and the variations are too many to try. Do you want the marriage or births checking on any of them?

Hello woodlander,

I wonder which pob is correct:

1851 Scotland census
Civil Parish: Paisley Abbey
Town: Elderslie
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 17 Elderslie
GALT Niven, head 1820 age 31 Clath Lapper Paisley, Renfrew
GALT Jane, wife 1824 age 27 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
GALT Mary, daughter 1849 age 2 Paisley, Renfrew
GALT William, 1851 age 3 Mo Paisley, Renfrew
I wonder if Niven & Jean returned to Scotland. I've searched using GALT and GAULT for their deaths in Qld. and NSW without luck. Daughter's marriage gives a clue:

The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866-1939) - Saturday 12 March 1870 p.1
MARRIAGES
ANDERSON-GAULT.-On the 4th March, at the residence of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Wm. Pauley, Margaret-street, by the Rev. Charles Ogg, James Anderson, to Mary Campbell Gault, daughter of the late Mr. Niven Gault, Paisley, Scotland.

I can't see his death in Scotland either.

Regards,

Dave

Hello woodlander,

Thanks for looking. I didn't have the image so that's curious it's POLLOCK.

William PAULIE's mother is Mary Campbell and Niven's daughter was named Mary Campbell and she married at her aunt's place, ie William PAULIE's.

So was it a 2nd marriage for Jean?

Mary's death reg clearly lists her mother as Jean Pauley not Pollock. Curious. That's one reason why I'm posting. To tidy up some of my tree. :)

Something seems odd. Cambuslang is in Lanarkshire but Low Church and Paisley are both in Renfrewshire.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Woodlander,

Thanks. I looked in 1841 and checked the box for surname variations and was told there were too many to display. :2fun:

If the census is correct then Jane/Jean PAULIE was born abt 1824 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. I found brother William's on FamilySearch but that's all.

And Mary Campbell GALT abt 1849 Paisley, Renfrewshire. I couldn't find that one on SP.

So far I can't see a POLLOCK - PAULIE marriage or another marriage for Niven with spouse as PAULIE.

Regards,

Dave

Hello woodlander,

It's quite curious. Here is a daughter I didn't have who didn't go with the family to Australia:

name: Jean Campbell Galt
gender: Female
baptism/christening date:
baptism/christening place: LOW CHURCH, PAISLEY, RENFREW, SCOTLAND
birth date: 09 Dec 1845
birthplace: Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: Niven Galt
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Jean Pollock
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C11962-4
system origin: Scotland-VR
source film number: 1041322
reference number: - 2:17LLKSQ

No sign of Mary or William b. abt 1851.

I wish the death records for Niven & Jean could be found so we can see the parents.

Regards,

Dave

Hello woodlander,

Not sure if it helps but Niven was a witness to a marriage or births for members of the LAIRD family. I've found nothing more that helps.

I hate these such sites that collect data from other sites and rearrange it and pretend to have email addresses and phone numbers...

Jean Pauley - Email, Address, Phone numbers, everything!
...anderson mary campbell niven galt jean pauley...
Regards,

Dave

I'll e mail you re image detail Dave.
I haven't managed to find anything on Galt and its variations, no BM or Ds,nor trying the father and siblings that were on the 1841 census.
The districts are close and I think only app 8 miles or so between Paisley and Cambuslang so change of boundaries etc. likely involved in differences.
I'll go back later and try the Laird marriage for clues - I didn't read the surname as that on the 1841 census but close enough to be worth a try.
Catch you later - grandson due now to attend "Grandma's Holiday College"

Hello woodlander,

Thank you very much.

I'm not sure that one is LAIRD either but mentioned it because it was a name that appears when you Google Niven Galt.

Regards,

Dave
