hello everyone, I am new to this site but not to family trees. Haveing started mine 15/16yrs ago but had to pause for a good 10yrs due to illness & disability, now it can be done on theinternet, oh boy what a change, it was all very heavy footwork before. My question was which piece of software is best for the job? It has to be easy (im no computer wizz), & i'm leaning towards the Roots Magic as it has research software with it + membership to a research program. Another i was looking at was the HIstorian, i would be VERY gratefull for you advice, i dont want to make a mistake, remember EASY please. thank you all, Mertyl... :2fun:

I too have heard that Roots Magic have a good program. There are loads out there, but my preference is an online system - internet web based site, where you can give access to no-one, just family or anyone. Therefore you can share your research with whom you want around the world 24 hours a day! This is here at Family History UK - Family Trees. Working on an update as we speak

Before using a normal program, the best way would be to go for a trial and test it. Save your information in a gedcom, so you can use it later or in another program.

pretty cheap software really but lots of useful resources.

Has any one any experience of upgrading Family Tree Maker 16 to the latest FTM 2008 version ?

I have been hesitant to try it as there seem to be potential difficulties. I have a large file 10,000 names and would hate to fail the migration or have to do it all manually

I have just upgraded to Family Historian we decided on this one as we like the family trees which you are able to draw with it and we wanted to be able to print out useful family trees for those of the family who don't use the internet or even email.

We have not been disapointed with the results.

It uses windows help format so to get the help to work on Windows Vista requires download of a file from the Microsoft web site. this isnt a problem if using windows XP.

Sorry technical bit but it is important to know the problems!

hi there the only programme i got is family tree maker which i my view is very much americian based but can catalougue all your tree data on to one programme. otherwise i use genesreunited as my my data base,if i can find any others out there that can do more than you credit i'd love to get my hands on it

I,m in a similar situation to Mertyl who started this thread. I'm looking for a p.c program to use for my family history material. I want it to run on windows vista and like Mertyl, need it to be fairly simple. I have a b.day coming up and my son(s) looking for suggestions what to get me, so I hope someone out there can offer a suggestion or two. Thanks in anticipation.

Hello I use Family tree maker version 16, but the whoi do you think you are version is very much the same you can get this for about £10,,very easy to use as well

I have used BK for several years, having bought the program after using the free version for a while - I am not sure what extra I got by buying it.

Pro's
a) There are regular updates issued, on the net, as problems are identified.
b) There is a BK forum for help and discussion. Actually there are two but one seems to be falling out of favour.
c) It has additional data fields which are not part of the GEDCOM standard.

Con's
a) The events list is not alphabetically sorted. It has some weird logic of its own.
b) I prefer the box report in FTM.

Overall, there is nothing much wrong with it and I would not recommend against it.

I use many of the genealogy programs (I must be a g as some have better advantages and methods.

My main program is Legacy Family Tree 7.0 the English version has 4 versions: * English (Australia) * English (Canada) * English (United Kingdom) * English (USA) *

So you can set it up the way you want..

The standard version is Free and if you like it the Deluxe version is very reasonalbe to purchase.

Moving around the program is a snap also.

It is very adaptable can be used as a stand alone program or integrated with other programs such as Word to develop more complex reports.

A trail version may be downloaded free from its website allowing purchasers to try before they buy.

I am afraid I cannot recommend any program that does not keep your data safely on your own computer at home.
The web is fine for back-ups and sharing but the database must remain on your own computer for safety.

Guy can I just back up wht you say, its so very true I use Legacy, FTM v 16 FTM 08 and then have ancestry and Tribal Pages have lost date far to often to chance anything ;;
I also back up to disc and internet storage, but as for which program to use they all have there good points and bad points
