I am trying to find out whether there is a link between Lewis Gent md.1882 to Fanny Balkwill, Torrington, Devon and James Henry Gent 1855 md. to Ellen Balkwill in Plymouth.

Do you have their parents names, or any birth certs.
Do you think 2 brothers married 2 sisters.

Can you go back to the begining ? Have you got the marriage certificates of both couples ? If not , then you may need to find them to see who their parents are . Are you with me so far?

You cannot run until you can walk !! If you can you can try
www.familysearch.org which is free, and you can use the advanced search and one or the other or both if you are lucky will come up and look you in the face.

If you have not got the certificates, I would urge you to get them. Then you can go back another generation which will help you. You also need to search for brothers and sisters on the same generation. Gent is a fairly common name in these parts, and some are Jewish so bear that in mind.

Hi, Fanny Balkwill's parents were Samuel 1827 and Ann.James Henry Gent's parents were Richard and Eliza. I don't have any certificates as yet. I was looking for any free info. first. I've got lots of names from family search but when it's a common name, more common to the area than I realised it's not always easy working out who is who and how they are related. I thought there might be brothers/sisters/cousins some way back.No-one left in the family knows anything, not even that they came from Devon. Marriages between cousins was quite common back then. I don't know of any Jewish connection but anything is possible, an interesting thought.

Hi, thanks for your thoughts. That is one of my theories or cousins. I have parentage but not certificates as yet. I'm trying to collect as much info. as I can before I find out whether I need them.

Having had yet another read through your original message, there is nearly 30 yrs between these 2 marriages. Not impossible but I would think they might be father and son, anything is possible.

Gent is sometimes spelt Ghent, and also Balkwill is also a very common name down here.
I am not going to the Record Office soon otherwise I would look it up for you. I will let you know if and when I can get there.
I still think you should get the marriage cert. for the youngest and see what that brings.

I thought that their parents might be siblings or cousins.I know that it is sometimes spelled Ghent. Does it have Belgian origins.

You're right about the certificates. I have all family lines in progress and they all need/have needed certificates it's a matter of priorities and pennies at the moment. Every little helps.

I see where you are coming from with Ghent but I have only known those with Jewish connections but they might have come from Belgium.

Hi Maddie,
I wonder where the Jewish element came from. The Gents and Balkwills are on my in-law's tree and there is no-one left to ask about themso I have only got my info. from the internet. I know that the Gents were leatherworkers and Lewis and Fanny moved to Grantham and he worked at the tannery.I don't think anyone here knew that Fanny was a Balkwill as she died when my mother-in-laws mother was young.No-one talked about their roots etc. and no-one hinks to ask when they are young, it's when you start getting older that you become interested.
