Can anyone help with this name please?

My gt grandfather, Stephen Geoghan, was born I think in Galway about 1841, son of Lawrence Geoghan.

This may not have been their surname when in Ireland, but this is the name recorded on Stephen`s marriage document and on the census.

I know so little about Stephen. He married in Stafford to Louisa Paddison, in 1881 Louisa and her children were in the Stoke on Trent workhouse
in 1885, the children, except for the eldest son Patrick, were sent to Canada, their surname changed to Gagan.
Louisa remarried in 1885, stating she was a widow, however, Stepohen reappeared on the 1901 census in Liverpoool, where he died in 1913, so Louisa was not after all a widow or was she told Stephen had died!

I assume he may have deserted Louisa either before or in 1881, did he return to Ireland?
any information would be most appreciated about the Geoghan family.

I am trying to trace any family in Ireland, I know so little about Stephen.
