Hello,

George AITKEN b. abt 1828 Broughton, Midlothian

- parents Robert AITKEN & Isabella (nee BORTHWICK)

I can't find George in 1851.

Janet CAIRNS b. abt 1833 Bridge of Allan, Stirling - not with her family in St Cuthbert's in 1851

Variations include CARNS & CARENS.

They married on 8 Jul 1851 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh, Midlothian

I would expect both of them to be in Midlothian on census day 30 March. Don't know if they were already living together.

I'd like a look up for both George and Janet in 1851 please.

Regards,

Dave

Address EastbSide

Isabella Aitken(e) head age 72 pauper U K? born Inveresk
James son age 28 occ coalminer born Inveresk
George son age 22 occ coalminer born Inveresk

1861 has this George with wife Jane. Jane has her place of birth Cranston

Hello Josie,

Thanks for looking.

I don't think that's them. Both George and Jennet show a different pob.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Julie,

Thanks for looking.

I doubt that's them. They arrived in Australia in 1852. I'll go back to the image of the shipping record now and post some more details of what is possibly George's brother.

Regards,

Dave

'William & Mary' 4 Jan 1852 Sydney and/or Newcastle Reel 2136, [4/4790] Page 125; Reel 2463, [4/4927]

AITKEN Thomas 26 and wife - Shepherd - Edinboro - Ch of Scotland - Both

The 'William & Mary' arrived in Sydney on 4 Jan 1852 and I doubt very much that it left before the 1851 census. So far I can't find port of origin.

The CAIRNS family without Janet:

1851
Piece: SCT1851/685 Place: St Cuthbert's -Midlothian Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: St Cuthberts Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 697 Page: 11 Schedule: 41

CAIRNS John Son - M 6 Scholar Stirlingshire - St Ninians
CAIRNS Catherine Dau - F 3 Midlothian - St Cuthberts
CAIRNS William Son - M 1 Midlothian - St Cuthberts
Perhaps a search for Thomas in 1851 will find them all.

Thomas AITKEN & Margaret STORIE
Marriage About 18 Jul 1851 Penicuik, Midlothian

Curious - it is an extracted record but says 'about' :D

Death # 1897/C4043 Aitken Margaret - Robert Story - Elizabeth - ** born Scotland aged 75 years

Death# 1882/B15290 Aitken George - Robert Aitken - Isabella Borthwick

Can't find a death for Thomas.

Dave

Hello cp,

I've found one of the four:

Piece: SCT1851/697 Place: Penicuik -Midlothian Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Penicuik Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Penicuik
Folio: 693 Page: 7 Schedule: 27
Address: Loan

Surname First name(s) Rel Status *** Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
STORIE Elizabeth Head W F 62 Pauper Lanarkshire - Biggar
STORIE Margaret Dau U F 25 Paper Factory Girl Peebles-shire - Stobo
STORIE Isabella Dau U F 21 Paper Factory Girl Peebles-shire - Stobo
STORIE Adam Son - M 19 Ag Lab Peebles-shire - Stobo
STORIE John Son - M 14 Baker Peebles-shire - Stobo

No sign of the other three. Found several George, but all with trades and not farm lab.

Where is Broughton? How far out of the city? Curious - a farm labourer in the city:

Broughton is an ancient feudal barony today within the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its borders are defined, approximately, as being Leith Walk in the south east, Broughton Street in the south west, Broughton Road in the north west and McDonald Road in the north east. Moving clockwise from south east, Broughton is bordered by Greenside and Calton, the New Town, Canonmills, and Pilrig.

Regards,

Dave
